PUP GOVERNMENT OF BELIZE ARE TACKLING SHORTAGE OF SCHOOLS AND CLASSROOMS THROUGHOUT BELIZE! NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION BOOMS

Produced by the Belize Development Trust

The PUP are to be complimented on a flurry of new inaugurations of new school additions, new schools, more classrooms throughout the rural districts of Belize. The program to build the physical plant for schools is a very good one and badly needed. The expected investment in new school construction is expected to be minimal, with an allotted $ 8 million annually assigned for the next ten years. With an annual income of $280 million the government of Belize should find it fairly easy to allocate $8 million a year for school upgrades. But this is not the case.

On the bad side, they have had to borrow money to do it! There are apparently all kinds of strings on the loan for the school building program from the foreign lenders. The real question is, why does Belize have to borrow such a little amount of money? The amount needed is only 2% of the average annual revenues. Why can't this be paid for out of annual general revenue? Where is the money going from government revenue, that we cannot finance our own school building program?
