Hurricanes are big tornadoes and usually cut a swath about 30 miles wide. Storm surge is directly in front of the hurricane eye, and demolishes coastal zones in a swath about 7 to 12 miles wide. Wind damage of an extreme nature, depending on wind force, is usually confined to a 16 mile swath.
