REPORT #520 September 2002
CORRECTING MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AGRICULTURE IN BELIZE

by Frank Redmond

The agricultural producers of Belize are net foreign exchange earners versus the food imports. True, we do not produce everything we eat, but what we produce and export, more than pays for the other imports, many times over.

Agriculture earns 47% of Belize's foreign exchange, and is the single largest foreign exchange sector. If you add fisheries, forestry and a few others agro related, agriculture is up close to 60%. Prety important.

On my own farm, over 90% of what I produce is exported, and I have a net gain of foreign exchange over the inputs I must buy of 4:1. (if prices are good, it can even be higher)
