Dear Editor,

With respect to Angel Nuñez' San Pedro Hall of Fame, I'd like to submit some overlooked people. These hard-working friends of San Pedro and it's waters are Melanie and Changa Paz and the staff of Amigos del Mar Dive Shop.

We are all aware of what's going on right now with the Cangrejo Caye project and how our central government seems to be rubber-starnping this controversial plan to capture wild dolphins for the "education" of tourists. This very same governrnent is the one that threw every stumbling block possible in the way of the civic-minded project to sink a derelict tug in an attempt to produce an artificial reef: to add to not take away from our resources. Melanie and Changa didn't give up and now we ALL stand to gain from their efforts. And today, this wreck sits, one mile south of Hol Chan, teeming with marine life, one of the most popular dive sites in Belize, already being written up in the major dive magazines. Oh, did I mention that they financed it from their own pockets?

This is in addition to the ongoing permanent mooring project that Amigos del Mar has been spearheading and their work with Green Reef. Can we thank the folks at Amigos enough? I doubt it: their efforts will have a positive effect on dive tourism in San Pedro and Belize for years to come. My one suggestion is that we start calling it the "Amigos Wreck". in appreciation for the unselfish work of Melanie and Changa and their employees.

Signed, Joe Miller
