THE ISLAND, WATERFRONT AND WATER SPORTS
San Pedro, at the south end of Ambergris Caye, is the island's only town. Ambergris is 25 miles long and less than a mile wide in most places. A barrier reef runs the length of the island, 1/4 mile offshore to the east. Inside the barrier reef the water is relatively shallow and the waves are modest.
Paradise Villas has its own 100-foot pier for swimming and fishing, with an artificial reef for readily-accessible snorkeling. The massive and varied scuba diving sites are just outside the barrier reef, a 5-10 minute boat ride away.
For scuba, snorkeling and all other water sports, we strongly recommend either Billy Leslie or Ched Cabral. Billy is at
Hustler Pier, 100 feet north of Paradise Villas. (Phone 501-226-4137; website www.scubadivingbelize.net, or email
address: hustler@btl.net) Billy has trained many of the divemasters in San Pedro
and elsewhere in Belize. Yet he
maintains a highly personalized dive operation that assures comfortable and successful diving for everyone from the expert to the beginner.
Hustler Tours also does deep-sea fishing, catamaran sailing, jungle river day-trips to a Mayan ruin (a must!), and has a large fast boat for quick access to places like the Blue Hole or the outer reefs.
The other recommended dive guide, Ched Cabral, is also located within easy walking distance of Paradise Villas. They offer 10% discounts on diving and snorkeling if you tell them you are staying at Beachfront Suites. He is an extremely competent and friendly dive and snorkel operator, who can also provide or arrange any other water sports or water tours for you.
Ched's shop is Reef Adventures, whose website is www.pcez.com/~emc. You can also call his partner Cap'n Ron in the U.S. at 503-452-9257, call Ched at the shop in San Pedro at 011-501-610-3621, or email them at reefman@pcez.com or reefman74@hotmail.com
