Arriving at Belize City International Airport, you are greeted by Kirlet our driver and shoreside tour guide. She will be glad to show you around the city and escort you to the water taxi on Haul Over Creek. The scenic one hour boat ride through the many little mangrove islands brings you to Ambergris Caye where Divocean and her crew, Captain Chris and Laura await you with icy cold rum punch and frosty beers to sooth away the heat of day. Life on board is completely relaxed and laid back. Our motto is "Arrive as friends and leave as family". After settling in, you may choose to spend the rest of the day taking a siesta in our hammock on deck or touring the lovely San Pedro - "La Isla Bonita" with its casual cobblestone streets, lovely boutiques and friendly local bars on the beach. The next day we set sail for Caye Caulker where life is slow and the livin' is easy. This place definitely has the feel of a sleepy fishing village although it has become a bit more cosmopolitan since being discovered by the many young international backpackers making their way through Central America. Here you can meet travelers from all over the world enjoying the tranquility of this sandy little island oasis. As we sail along today just inside the barrier reef, we make a stop to snorkel or dive at Hol Chan (Mayan for "little channel") Marine Reserve, one of the many marine protected areas in Belize. The channel walls run perpendicular to the barrier reef and are lined with brain, star, and rose coral and sponges. After lunch we head over to Shark Ray Alley where you regularly see large numbers of nurse sharks and a variety rays. While we do not encourage feeding wildlife, these creatures have become accustomed to the local divemasters handing them treats so they are very friendly and do not hesitate to check out the snorkelers in the water. An exhilarating experience for anyone who has never been around sharks before! Today we head out into the big blue sea on our way to the largest of Belize's three offshore atolls. The Turneffe Islands are surrounded by an incredible wall of living reef, stretching over 30 miles north to south and up to 10 miles east to west. The atoll provides some of Belize's most spectacular diving. This is also a wonderful place to try your hand at wind surfing, do a little kayaking around the inner lagoons, snorkel, fish, or just relax. The choice is yours. Wake up and smell the gourmet coffee brewing and the bacon sizzling while we set our sails for The Triangles. Rendezvous Caye is our first stop; one of Belize's most pristine gems sitting on top of the barrier reef. This deserted island offers divine diving and snorkeling on both the north and south side of its shores. Sprinkled with gently swaying palms and a lovely beach, this makes a great place for a beach BBQ lunch. In the afternoon we check out Bluefield Range where we can explore a working lobster and fishing camp. The friendly fisherfolk here are happy to entertain you with their stories and if we're lucky, some garifuna drumming. This island oasis is an excellent place to snorkel with manatees. A leisurely sail north offers a string of palm studded isles for beachcombing or diving on the nearby barrier reef. Or if you prefer we can stop and explore the mangroves by kayak and fish along the way. If you didn't spot a manatee yesterday then Swallow Caye is the place to be. Established as a wildlife sanctuary, you will find a healthy population of these gentle giants here due to the abundance of turtle grass beds in this important habitat area. Part of the sanctuary are the nearby Drowned Cayes which sustain other marine life like the American crocodile and bottlenose dolphin. Later we sail into Cucumber Marina where we enjoy cocktails under the stars and a delicious dinner ashore. Laura and Chris have both been passionate about the watery realm since they were kids. It's not surprising they should meet underwater during a dive in Tobago, West Indies. Not long afterwards the two flew back to South Africa to purchase a sailboat which they refitted and sailed back to the Caribbean. Since then they have been up and down the islands and back and forth across the Atlantic several times. After spending some time doing charters in the Windward and Leeward islands they decided to look for the beautiful diving they knew they would find in Belize. Chris has spent his whole life near the water. He was diving before there were institutions to certify divers. He is now a PADI Divemaster. His working career began when he built his first dive boat with his father as a teenager. He later went on to build several other larger sailboats but his technical training was with Mercedes as a diesel engineer on the marine side. After more than 15 years with Mercedes he decided to go on his own and ran a marine repair shop in South Africa. You never have to worry about the boat you're sailing on when you're with Chris as he always keeps the highest level of maintenance. Laura spent her youth following whales around. She studied marine biology and coastal resource management at the University of Victoria in Canada. After finishing her degree, she was very active in the whale watching industry. She also became one of the founders of the Marine Awareness Society, sharing her excitement for all the creatures of the sea with school children and various community groups. Her love of the sea naturally inspired her to become a diver and she is now a PADI Dive Instructor. Working one-on-one with those of us who are a little intimidated with being underwater is her specialty, and with a natural gift for being patient, she gives you that extra care and attention needed to have you diving the warm Caribbean waters in no time at all.
