Tours Mainland Adventures Lamanai Lamanai means “submerged crocodile,” in the Maya language and it’s also the name of the third largest, and possibly most interesting, archeological site in Belize. Located in the Orange Walk District, the Lamanai temple complex sits atop the western bluff of the New River Lagoon and is surrounded by pristine rainforest. Lamanai was occupied continuously for over 3,000 years and it’s remoteness contributed to it’s continuous occupation, well beyond most other Maya sites, until at least 1,650 AD. Set in tropical forest and providing spectacular views from several of its large temples, Lamanai provides a unique experience into the culture of the Maya and the biological diversity of the tropical forest. Lamanai features the second largest Pre-Classic structure in the Maya world and unlike other ruins, much of Lamanai was built in layers where successive populations built upon the temples of their ancestors, instead of destroying them. Although hundreds of ruins are said to remain unexcavated in the nearby jungle, three of the most impressive temples have been renovated: the Jaguar Temple, named for its boxy jaguar decoration; the Mask Temple, adorned by a 13-foot stone mask of an ancient Maya king; and the High Temple, offering visitors a panoramic view from its summit. What remains of two 16th century Catholic missions are also nearby. Maya natives rebelled and burned the churches to the ground as part of a regional uprising. A make-shift Maya stelae standing in front of what remains of one church, is widely interpreted as renouncing all allegiance to Christianity. The sites protected status provides for an abundance of wildlife inside the park. There are a growing number off howler monkeys that make Lamanai their home and you will most likely see them peering down through the branches as you wander the trails. In addition, the marshlands around the lagoon supports many species of water birds and wildlife, including crocodiles. The on-site museum houses an amazing collection of impressive artifacts depicting Maya gods and animals. Facilities include restrooms and a covered picnic area for visitors. Altun Ha Altun Ha is the most extensively-excavated Maya site in Belize. The core site includes thirteen structures clustered within two Classic period plazas. Entering the site you approach Plaza A, which is enclosed by large temples on all four sides. Here a magnificent tomb was discovered beneath The Temple of the Green Tomb. Dating from 550 AD, this find yielded a total of thee hundred pieces, including jade, jewelry, stingray spines, skin flints and the remains of a Maya Book. Click to Enlarge The Adjacent Plaza B is dominated by the sites largest temple, The Temple of Masonry Altar, which rises 60 feet above the plaza and was the last in a sequence of buildings raised on this spot. This temple was probably the main focus of religious ceremonies, with a single stairway running up the front to an altar at the top. Several priestly tombs have been uncovered within the main structure, however most of them had already been desecrated, possibly during political turmoil that preceded the abandonment of the site. It was here that archeologist discovered a carved jade head of Kinich Ahau, the Maya sun god. At 15cm high, it is the largest carved jade piece to be found anywhere in the Maya world. Just outside these two main plazas, a short nature trail leads to Clay-lined Rockstone Pond, which was damned and used as a reservoir in Maya times, Altun Ha was an important trading and religious ceremonial center. Evolution of the temples at Altun Ha continued until about 1,000 AD. Xunantunich Mayan Ruin Say {Zoo-nan-two-nich} Xunantunich is located across from San Jose Succotz, a few miles from the western border. The partially-excavated and largest pyramid, El Castillo, rises 130 feet above the main plaza and offers an impressive Panoramic View of the Belize’s Cayo District and nearby Guatemala. El Castillo, is known for its frieze, a banded stucco decoration which at one time extended around the entire pyramid. Impressive museum displays a three-dimensional model of the entire Xunantunich site, as well as depicting the evolution of Maya civilization. Three stelae from the site are on display. Cave Tubing and Zip Line To begin the tour, as you step off your tender boat at the dock in Belize City, you will be met by your guide You will then enjoy a leisurely ride through the countryside in a fully equipped, air conditioned van or bus. The cave tubing tour is a mere hour drive from the commercial center of Belize City, in the historic Sibun Caves Branch Archaeological Park which provides its visitors with some of the best opportunities to explore cave tubing in Belize and appreciate the area’s spectacular cave formations. Your cave tubing tour will start with a 30 minute hike through well kept and easy to traverse nature trails, which take you through two small dry caves with gorgeous stalactite and stalagmite formations and awesome crystal curtains. The flora of the rainforest is typical of a well preserved tropical broadleaf eco-system, with many famous hardwoods, medicinal plants, and some farming produce such as guava, mamei, pineapple, sugarcane, mango, avocado, and coconut trees. As you reach the river system of the Sibun Caves Branch, enjoy a cool splash in this undisturbed, unpolluted spring and rain fed waterway which punched a cavernous cave system through the hills of the Sibun Range during the early cretaceous period – over 100 million years ago! But there is more to this system than meets the eye. The advent of the famous Maya Civilization to this area known as Meso-America, meant the use of the caves as an earthly journey through the mythological underworld of the Maya faith – and confrontation with the nine dark lords who governed the nine levels of that world. As you float down the river, you will experience the wonder of animal and bird-shaped stalactite formations once held sacred by those Mayan shamans, so be sure to bring along a waterproof camera, even a disposable one, with a flash unit. At the end of your cave tubing journey through this astounding cave system, you will float out into the open, under the canopy of the majestically tall trees lining the riverbanks, until you end up right back where you started walking. This makes for an easy and totally enjoyable circuit, and allows you the opportunity to relax and reflect after your adventure. Included in your tour: A/C van or bus with cellular phones for constant contact, cold bottled water, all professional cave tubing and safety equipment, highly trained guides, river safety staff, security for personal items, modern bathrooms, park entrance fees, showers and changing rooms provided for you at the site. Zip Lines are great fun. You will feel like you are flying over the Jungle CanopyUpon arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then outfitted in the safety equipment of Body Harness, Helmet and Gloves. A short Jungle Hike to the first platform ensues before heading into the Jungle Canopy to start this wild adventure. Cave Tubing or Zip Line and Belize Zoo Welcome to the best little zoo in the world! The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests. Shortly after the backyard “zoo” began, it was quickly realized that its Belizean visitors were unfamiliar with the different species of wildlife which shared their country. This very aspect fomented the commitment to develop the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center. Today, The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as gifts from other zoological institutions. A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person. The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center believes that by bringing the people of Belize closer to the animals which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and want to protect them for future generations. The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center receives over 15,000 school children every year as part of the progressive education programs, and popular zoo events include: April the Tapir’s birthday party; summer camps; Science Fair; Teacher Training; and Student Career Training. Snorkeling Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley One of the most impressive snorkeling destinations on ambergris caye is Hol Chan and Shark & Ray Alley. Off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye is Belize’s oldest marine reserve, Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Hol Chan is Mayan for ‘little channel.” The entire reserve focuses on a cut through the reef (called a quebrada) which is little more than 25 yards (23 m) wide and 30 feet (9 m) deep about 4 miles southeast of San Pedro. The reserve was formed primarily as a community-based initiative due to concern over the high level of uncontrolled, often destructive fishing and diving activities in the area. During this trip you are sure to see turtles nurse sharks stings rays and a wide variety of tropical fish that reside in this park area. Mexico Rocks and Dos Cocos Another popular snorkeling is Mexico Rocks and Dos Cocos located approximately 6 miles to the north of San Pedro Town. In this area you can enjoy seeing a variety of juvenile fishes which you probably don’t in other areas. These snorkeling tours last about two and a half hours and they both are two stops , refreshments included. Hol Chan Shark Ray & Caye Caulker Caye Caulker is a a four mile long island, part of a chain of islands forming the Belize Barrier Reef. Caye Caulker has a relaxing atmosphere with white sand streets, golf carts for transportation, and casual dress with no shoes. The weather is usually quite pleasant year around. After snorkeling the famous Hol Chan marine reserve then you will have the chance to make an elective snorkeling stop before we take you for lunch on this island. On your return we make a last stop to play with sharks and rays to wrap up your day of fun. Night Snorkeling (1 Hour) After dark, the ocean comes alive allowing snorkelers to see many things that can’t be witnessed during the daylight. Snorkel with your Adventure Guide or our divers and explore the coral reef by flashlight! Your guide will point out the intriguing creatures that prefer the night shift such as octopus, squid, tiger tail sea cucumbers, squirrel fish and sipper lobsters. See the coral come alive with their polyps wafting in the current, actively feeding on the plankton which glows and sparkles with bioluminescent light. This tour is great fun and allow you to appreciate the most active period for many marine creatures.
