Another Blue Hole Shark

These sharks came in so close to us that many of my pictures were of shark parts and not the whole fish.
It was a great trip out there.

BTW... this was taken with a $50 ebay digital camera in a $50 ebay housing. No flash used so no back-scatter.

Glad you like it. Yep, I took it. I might invest a little in a slave flash for the next trip. The camera flash is poor and the reflection of particles in the water makes it useless.

Here is a url to the same picture only a slightly larger size.

Camera is a used Olympus D-560 (3.2 megapixels) and matching used housing is Olympus PT-017. Real basic stuff. Not a whole lot of functions. Just enough to confuse me. About 5 buttons on the back and I'm always pressing the wrong one. The flash on it is less than worthless underwater. I think the trick is to get as close as you can and then get closer. Dont swim after the fish.

Here are a couple other underwater shots.

Well you've figured out about light traveling underwater - your strobe will not light beyond 5'. You are also right about letting them come to you. You actually got down pretty good - if you had dropped down another foot or two when you shot at more of an upward angle the shark would have been against the water background instead of blending in with the reef.
Your composition is good - vertical lines usually look best and you got the whole guy - even gave him some room to swim in the picture (vs. having his nose against the edge).

Does your housing have a red filter that can be moved in front of the lens? If so, try using that with some available light and see what happens. Keep up the good work.

Remember the mantra: Get down, get close, shoot up.
