Large dark eyes indicate that it is mostly a bird of nocturnal habit.
The most unique thing about the boat-bill is the way it uses its bill to create a noise, like a resounding clap, to communicate with other Boat-Bills with in the mangrove forest. The bill is a resonator. Taxonomist are all over the map about its relationships with the heron, crane, stork or possible a unique classification of its on.
