Chachalaca

yyou've probably heard the cackling of Chachalaca coming from the back bush.
The Chachalaca is a wild bush turkey. Rarely seen but often heard at sun up and sun down. Of the 39 species of Chachalaca in the world, 3 are found in Belize. Ambergris Chachalaca are brown with pheasant like tail and a red throat, sometime weighing over two pounds. This fowl was most definitely a food source for the Maya and buccaneers living on this island in its past.

I'm ready to go hunting! They stay outside my window and Squack very loud at weird times..especially when it rains. Noisy Birds! I've had local kids with sling-shots hunting them but I've chased them away...

This one is a young female. Just in recent years have the local men stopped hunting them with guns in my neck of the woods.
and here it is making that crowing noise.

Elbert - Saturday afternoon one of these birds ran across the road in front of the golf cart. It was the first time I or my caretaker had seen one here on the island. I was just south of Beach'n Kitchen.
Dulce Wolf once told me that when they made noise at sunset someone was going to die. Are you familiar with this fable?

They live in small groups that stay in touch with other groups with daily, morning and afternoon crowing.a very secretive illusive bird.
Have to be if you taste like chicken.

I'm actually very protective of "my" birds...but the neighborhood is growing...more new houses...birds moving away....I miss the squawks, chirps, and whistles.

Jesse since you brought it up ,I edited that block of type for this bird just for you. I wrote it 8 years ago for the San Pedro Sun and it originally said."If you're one of the lucky people that live north enough on the island to escape the noise of airplanes and the city life of San Pedro, then you've probably heard the cackling of Chachalaca coming from the back bush.
The Chachalaca is a wild bush turkey. Rarely seen but often heard at sun up and sun down. Of the 39 species of Chachalaca in the world, 3 are found in Belize. I figured you had enough North BS for the day.
