I was told this is called a May tree, does anyone know for sure? I do love the bright color though.

It's called a flambouyant tree. Gets the name "May Tree" because they only bloom once a year, usually in May, though some of them bloom in late April or early June. I have seen them in yellow, orange, red, and a mixture of any of those. Lots of them on the mainland. They are beautiful when they are in bloom, but most of the year, they look dead.

you see incredible views with hundreds of these on the hillsides on the mainland. the green of the vegetation mixed with the incredible huge clumps of red and orange and yellow make one of the most beautiful things i've seen.

I've been Chetumal twice and was awed by the enormous Flamboyant Trees that lined the highways and sometimes wee the center dividers. The trees on the island that are away from the wind and properly pruned are beautiful. There is an outstanding specimen in the parking lot by Barefoot Books and Mickey's Restuarant.
