Electricray, Sardines & Mangrove fish

These images were taken with my Canon underwater still camera while snorkeling right off the beach in front of my condo.

The Lesser Electric Ray can produce up to 37 volts. They tend to live in the Eel Grass and are not aggressive. Just don't step one them.

Hello Harriette, its not an Electric Ray its a Yellow Stingray. They are often found under docks in the shade - a good reason for not wallking around under docks. The Electric Eels are a similar size but have a stubby short tail with an additional dorsal fins on it.

Phil - we checked this as thoroughly as possible and the Yellow does not have the markings that this guy had. Can anyone else weigh in on this?

Phil is correct. The electric ray has a slightly different pattern over its body plus 2 dorsal fins on its tail. Your photo is of a yellow stingray.

Harriette, have a look at a Paul Humann Reef Fish book and you'll see the difference. Many Dive Shops have a copy as it is excellent. The photograph of the Yellow Stingray isn't the best as they are much more yellow and Green as in your photo.
