Looks like a typical honey bee in the pic.

As far as I am aware, all bees in Belize are Africanised hybrids.

The bees are a bother but haven't stung anyone yet. Why do you think they are Africanized?
Elbert - I have a pair of the Black-Coweled now and had some last year too. They seem to migragte. Wait til you see what I shot yesterday! Post coming.

Hi Scuba Lady, I'm not a beekeeper but I have friends who are. Not sure the history about how they became africanised, but they all are. I realise this is not a scientific source but I can't be bothered to do a more detailed search - though I'm sure you'll find more info if you look.

"Virtually all the honeybees you see in Belize are now Africanized and are present in most areas, even Ambergris Caye. If you stumble on a hive, try to get under a roof (bees usually won't follow you under a shelter) or into water." http://www.belizefirst.com/10watch.html

I have a friend that keeps bees here on the island. He subdues them with smoke. But he does also wear some protective gear.

Thanks for the tips on protection Colette.

Does he collect the honey? I wish I could find their nest.
Exactly what does it mean to be Africanized?
