Mike Gvara, "Island Dog"

Island Icon Mike Gvara AKA "Island Dog" Passes Away

The San Pedro Sun has confirmed that long time island resident and artist Mike Gvara, fondly known as "Island Dog" was found deceased in his San Pedro home this evening.

According to friends, Mr. Gvara has been suffering from ill health and was last seen Saturday afternoon letting his dogs in. No foul play is suspected at this time.

For years The San Pedro Sun printed his amusing cartoons depicting the island life he had grown to love. He will be terribly missed and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.

Amanda Syme	You may be gone but you will not be forgotten. Cal and I love your work so much that we took 8 prints to the UK and had them framed and hung in our house in Scotland. Your drawings of the island that we love and call home catch the true essence of San Pedro. You can feel the sand between your toes and breeze on your face and the anticipation of a new day or night simply by looking at these sketches. Goodbye Mike. Rest in peace.

MikeCaroleinKC	We too will miss Mike. Like others we have 2 of his drawings hanging in our house, one of which we had given him several photos we had taken in 2000/2001 and he drew a collage of them for us.
