parked near the reef... Bill Gates' yacht

The Attessa IV

Bill Gates, the second richest man in the world, is in Belize - on the 23rd longest private yacht in the world. According to the San Pedro Sun, he arrived this morning with his family and was aboard the Super Yacht Atessa IV - which is anchored near San Pedro. The yacht is 330 feet long and comes equipped with an upper deck pool jacuzzi, a spa, and even a helicopter- which was cleared to fly in Belize.

The vessel's estimated value is in the hundreds of millions, and it belongs to multi billionaire industrialist, Dennis Washington. According to the San Pedro Sun, the Attessa IV is expected to stop at renowned sites such as Hol Chan Marine Reserve, the Great Blue Hole and The Turneffe Atolls. But this isn't his first trip to Belize. Gates also came here in 2005 - also in a yacht. This time he is travelling with six family members and 23 crew members. The yacht was given clearance to stay in Belize until May 9th.

More on the ship HERE and here.

The Attessa IV has been adrift off Ambergris Caye outside the Belize Barrier Reef since early Tuesday, April 10th with the world's second richest man on board. Aboard the 330ft private super yacht is Bill Gates along with six family members and a crew of 23. The vessel, captained by Sergiy Pashchenko, was given the clearance to navigate into Belizean waters just before mid-morning and has permission to remain in the country until May 9th.

According to sources within the Immigration Department, the vessel was cleared by personnel that flew in from Belize City. The Attessa IV is expected to make stops at various world renowned destinations including Hol Chan Marine Reserve, southern Belize, The Turneff Atolls and the Great Blue Hole.

Talk about special treatment. I remember seeing a guy sitting under the plane a few years back guarding it at Goldson. Poor guy.

2nd Richest Man in the World, Bill Gates, on family vacation in Belize

US billionaire, Bill Gates, the second richest man in the world, and his wife Melinda along with other family members are vacationing in the Jewel. News that his yacht was moored nearby sent the residents of the island speculating whether the Gates would drop in to enjoy the island's charm. Gates arrived this morning on his luxury mega yacht Attessa IV which is sitting right off the coast of Ambergris Caye, outside the barrier reef. As far as we can tell, soon after arrival the Gates family was flown to the private resort of Cayo Espanto off Ambergris Caye and by this afternoon they reportedly headed to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The billionaire and his family are expected to make stops at various world renowned destinations in Belize including southern Belize, the Turneffe Atolls and the Great Blue Hole. Immigration and custom officials this morning gave them the all clear for a one month stay in Belize but it is not known how long they will remain in the country. The three hundred and thirty foot yacht has a crew of twenty-three and comes complete with a helipad. The vessel is being captained by Sergiy Pashchenko; it has an estimated value of two hundred and fifty million dollars and can accommodate up to thirty-six guests along with the crew.

Bill and Melinda Gates

Gates, the founder and owner of Microsoft Company, has a fortune worth some sixty-two billion dollars. He has donated in the range of thirty billion dollars to charity and is a recognized as a leading philanthropist. Along with his wife, they have established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations. To understand the magnitude of his wealth, it is estimated that Gates earns two hundred and fifty US dollars every second, which is over twenty-one million US dollars a day. On a point of interest, in January of 2012 the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) signed an agreement with Belize under the Salud Mesoamerica 2015 Initiative during the SICA Head of Central Banks meeting at Coco Beach Belize on Ambergris Caye. The project has sponsorship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Carlos Slim Health Institute. Slim, a Mexican national, is the richest man in the world.

Bill Gates in San Pedro

Yesterday afternoon a HUGE boat pulled up just outside the reef off Ambergris Caye. It's honestly the biggest boat I have ever seen. It is ridiculous. Everyone on shore and on the Internet was abuzz with gossip...Jimmy Buffett? Oprah Winfrey? Beyonce and Jay-Z? Pictures like this were surfacing on Facebook...from the San Pedro Harbourmaster.

Turns out Bill Gates (worth about $60 billion USD), his family and a crew of over 20 are on board and registered to stay in Belize until May 9th. (He is merely renting it.) They are supposedly sticking around San Pedro for a bit and then headed south to the cayes and atolls. Since he is probably reading my blog right now (and undoubtedly stunned by my technological savvy and reporting prowess), I'd like to say "Welcome to Belize, Bill...cocktail hour starts at my condo at 4pm. Let me know if you need a copy of my resume ready. Or maybe let's just meet up at Wet Willy's for Ladies Night? It's your call."

Bill Gates enjoys the "real Belize"

He may be the second richest man in the world, but Bill Gates is enjoying Belize the way many visitors, from A list celebrities to backpackers do - by experiencing the natural beauty of the Caribbean sea, pristine rainforests and Maya heritage, according to a Belizean travel professional.

"That's the wonderful thing about Belize," Chaa Creek marketing administrator Larry Waight said today, "You can be one of the richest people in the world, or a backpacker on a shoestring budget, and still share similarly amazing experiences by immersing yourself in what we call the 'real Belize'.

"Belize is all about natural beauty, our rich Maya culture and interacting with some of the warmest, friendliest people on the planet, and your enjoyment of Belize doesn't depend upon how much money you have. An openness to explore new things and to embrace nature and new experiences is more valuable than a big credit card balance," Mr Waight said.

"Of course, Bill Gates' experience is obviously a bit different than most peoples. The point is that, in Belize, it's not automatically better," he added.

Mr Waight was referring to the Gate's family visit to Belize aboard their super yacht, the ATTESSA IV, which dropped anchor just outside the Belize Barrier Reef at near San Pedro on Ambergris Cayes the morning of Tuesday Aril 10, according to the local Ambergris Today website.

The 100-meter long yacht has a helipad and Ambergris Today reported that the Gates family were transported to the Cayo Espanto Private Island resort via helicopter and snorkelled the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Other sources report that the family is expected to visit an as yet unnamed Belizean inland eco resort to experience Belize's rainforest and Maya cultural attractions.

"The Gate's family visit really highlights some of the things that make Belize so special. Just the fact that this is where he chooses to spend time with the wife and children shows how family friendly we are, and how many things Belize offers people for spending quality time together.

"And it reminds us of how environmentally and culturally rich Belize is. Where else can you go from the sparkling Caribbean Sea and white sandy beaches in the morning, and be amidst howler monkeys, toucans, parrots and other exotic wildlife in a pristine jungle setting filled with ancient Maya temples that afternoon?

"And the best thing is, you don't need a private helicopter to make it happen. For many of our guests at Chaa Creek, it's just part of the experience, and we take pride in the fact that we make this possible - and affordable - for many families from around the world," Mr Waight said.

Bill Gates' Children Enjoy Belize

Bill Gates' daughters' visit to a popular Belizean eco resort highlighted the fact that no matter their background, kids will be kids when immersed in the natural beauty of the rainforest environment, The Lodge at Chaa Creek's spa manager, Bryony Fleming, said today.

Bill Gates' daughters' visit to a popular Belizean eco resort highlighted the fact that no matter their background, kids will be kids when immersed in the natural beauty of the rainforest environment, The Lodge at Chaa Creek's spa manager, Bryony Fleming, said today.

Ms. Fleming said that 16 and 7 year old Jennifer and Phoebe Gates visited Chaa Creek with a young friend for an enjoyable day in the rainforest that included a visit to the Butterfly Farm, lunch and some pampering at the Chaa Creek Hilltop Spa.

"One thing you really notice is how similarly kids respond to the rainforest environment, no matter their cultural, national or economic backgrounds," Ms. Fleming said, "The look of wonder when they're surrounded by beautiful, gigantic Blue Morpho butterflies, and seeing them go from pupae stage to being released into the forest - it's a fascination that all people, whether young and old, seem to share," she said.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek sits within a private 365 acre nature reserve and with a Natural History Centre, Butterfly Farm, professional spa and amenities including a fine restaurant, jungle lounge, pool and numerous other attractions is Belize's most recognized eco resort and a popular destination for families visiting Belize.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the world's second richest man, and his family arrived in Belize 10 April aboard the Attessa IV, a private 330 ft. super yacht currently anchored off the Belize Barrier Reef near San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye. The Attessa IV is cleared to be in Belizean waters until May 9th and the Gates' are expected to visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, the Turneffe Atolls and the famous Blue Hole, according to the San Pedro Sun. Chaa Creek was the family's first inland destination, and the girls arrived by a private helicopter launched from the yacht's helipad.

Ms. Fleming said the two teenage girls enjoyed a pedicure and nail polishing while the younger Phoebe was enthralled with releasing a butterfly from the glass nursery box and "make a wish" poem all young visitors to Chaa Creek find in their rooms upon arrival at Chaa Creek.

The girls then enjoyed a pizza and pasta lunch at the restaurant before boarding the helicopter for the ride back to the yacht.

"It was wonderful to see how much the girls enjoyed their stay and how enchanted they were with the butterflies, natural beauty and other things we tend to take for granted," Ms. Fleming said. "We respect all our guests' privacy, so no one knew who they were and I think they enjoyed just being able to be themselves and having a relaxing visit away from the public glare. "

The girls seemed to be enjoying Belize and said they wished they could stay longer but "had to go back home for school," Ms. Fleming said.

"It just goes to show that no matter who your father is, some things never change," Ms. Fleming laughed.
