This past weekend, the Caye Caulker Environmental Club held a poster making contest. Children 14 years and under were encouraged to make a poster based on the topic of protecting the environment. There were many participants and the event displayed the community talent at the basketball courts downtown where judges took votes by the passing public to determine their winners.
In first place was Sophia Diego, second Mercedes Requeña, third Victor Escobar, fourth Lilly Aldana, and fifth prize went to Larry Leslie. After the winners were declared the students went to their primary school to paint a mural based on their posters. Prizes included cash, paints, t-shirts, and a Hol Chan snorkel trip.

The event was directed and organized by Jeanie Nicholas, the local librarian. A number of volunteers and students helped to make this a successful event. Thanks to the sponsors: F.A.M.A.R.A.C.C., C.C.B.T.I.A., Siwa-ban Foundation, Belize Forestry Department, and Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

Students and teachers alike returned to school on Monday to see the fresh looking mural as a new addition to their school grounds. Hats off to an excellent idea of using community talent and local student participants to beautifying our local surroundings. Congratulations to you all!
