Belmopan, August 28th , 2007- The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) continues to update the public on its continued relief efforts in the Northern Districts of Belize.

NEMO informs that there are now only 66 persons housed in shelters around the Corozal District.

Today an additional 5,000 sheets of metal roofing, 1,000 sheets of plywood, 13 drums of chlorine and 1500lbs of nail were received and were distributed to those in need. The Belize Defence Force, British Army Training Support Unit Belize (BATSUB), Belize Police Department and Kolbe Foundation continue to provide personnel to assist the reconstruction effort. Jointly they have repaired 54 houses within the most affected areas. However, additional manpower remains a critical need and volunteer contributions are welcome.

The Belize Red Cross continues to receive and distribute relief supplies and today an additional 1,000 bed sheets, 1,000 blankets, 500 kitchen sets and 750 tarpaulins arrived.

To date more than 1,700 houses have been sprayed to prevent diseases. Additionally sanitary inspections and provisions for water purification have been conducted in Chan Chen, Patchakan, Caledonia, Sarteneja, Xaibe, Cristo Rey and Yo Chen. Common illnesses diagnosed and treated today included fever, coughs, the common cold, and skin infections.

NEMO's Damage Needs and Assessment Committee has identified the requirement for additional baby and child clothing as well as pampers and baby formula. Donations of these items can be sent to NEMO Corozal.

The distribution of supplies is ongoing, and those businesses and companies with access to forklifts and dump trucks who wish to participate in the relief effort are welcome to offer their equipment that would allow for more efficient and expedient distribution within the disaster area.
