James Adderley with the Weekly Sports Wrap up

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The Inter-District Football Tournament as presented by the Football Federation of Belize moved into the playoffs over the weekend with all 8 teams seeing action in the quarterfinal round. We caught up with the matchup inside the People’s Stadium, O.W. where Carmelita FC hosted Mavericks of Punta Gorda in a ballgame that produced half a dozen goals.

In the early goings the home team, the Carmelita in control when Marlon Miranda mounts this individual effort that allows him to enter this ball into the danger zone—a streaking Aldair Chan can’t do anything with it as the visiting Mavericks eventually come up with the necessary clearance. Carmelita continues to push the ballgame when Richard Gillett pushes this pass too close to goalkeeper Carl Ramclam who bungles the clearance, Orvin Wade Jr. comes up with possession and he gives his team a 1-zip lad some 20 minutes in. Marlon Miranda then gets his turn to give Carmelita a 2-zip lead but unleashes a high riser from this open look at goal. 7 minutes later, Edwin Gillett finds Orvin Wade Jr. with this spot kick—Wade’s header finds Richard Gillett and his right away right foot crashes into the net to give Carmelita a 2-zip lead which they would take into intermission.

The second half play, the Mavericks from PG come alive—Everette Genus deals to Kenton “Microwave” Galvez, fresh off the bench, he is taken down inside the box by Albert Conorquie and the referee rules penalty. Up steps Jamie Mangar for the visitors and he pulls one back with this conversion to make it a 2-1 score. At the other end, Miranda picks out Isaac Gillett Jr. but his header at goal can only he defined as errant. A few minutes later, Richard Gillett keeps this ball alive to Jeron Ico, Ramclam is beaten and the host team takes a 3-1 lead. Now here is an ugly foul by Jevon Ico on Zebeehan Moore which leads to a red card that leaves Carmelita with 10 men. To make matters worse, Ico tries to intimidate the referee who sticks to his guns. In fact, things almost got out of control when Moore runs at ICO in a bid for vengeance, however cooler heads prevailed and we must ask what Jevon Ico was doing on the pitch after being red carded.

So the Mavericks set out to make the most of their numerical advantage and in heavy traffic, Kenton ‘Microwave” Galvez turns on this ball to force a 3-2 showing on the scoreboard.

In the meantime, we maintain that Everette Genus should have received a card for this unnecessary challenge on goalkeepers Alvin Conorquie, but none was forthcoming. It’s getting late now, so the Mavericks look to the set piece for the equalizer. They send for “Microwave” Galvez against a wall 6 man deep and his potent low cruise missile sizzles pass everyone for the 3-3 final score.

In other action in the FFB Inter-District Tournament which features a home and away format in the quarterfinals; World FC hurt Hopkins 4-1, Libertad double Benguche 2-1 and Athletico handled Cristo Rey by that very same score.

In news from the BPFL action, over the weekend saw Belmopan Blaze blank Hankook Verdes 2-zip, San Felipe Barcelona beat San Pedro Sea Dogs 3-2 and the Belize Defence Force edged FC Belize 2-1.

Finally in cycling news, the massive Sagitun Cycling Classic is set for this Sunday Novermber 7th, at Independence, This race has been converted to a 10 lap circuit event to make it more spectator-friendly and we applaud the effort.
