The Government of Belize today signed a memorandum of understanding for a clean solar energy project with the University of Belize.

"Signatories to the MOU were the Financial Secretary Joseph Waight and the Acting President and President Emeritus Dr. Corinth Morter Lewis. A, also present was the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Works Cadet Henderson. It is basically a 20 million dollars is being funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency designed to introduce clean energy to Belize by solar electricity generation using photovoltaic panels which are referred to as the PV system. The President at the signing said that UB is poised to become a leader in clean solar energy in the region and remarked that students in particular from the engineering faculty will benefit from being exposed to this cutting-edge technology. Construction of the panels which will be completed in one year will commence in August of this year and expect that it will be completed on time. It will be built on 2.04 acres of land at UB's Central Campus. All related costs to the construction and operations will be realized by Government and JICA. UB would like to thank the Governments of Belize and Japan, express our appreciation for making it possible for UB to participate in this clean energy project. This project in our view is in alignment with the vision and mission of the University in pursuit of a green and environmentally friendly campus which I must say will also complement the green city of Belmopan".
