A number of residents from Corozal Town today gathered in front of the Corozal Town Hall.

"By six thirty in the morning over a hundred residents of Corozal Town gathered in front of the Corozal Town Council in what appeared to be a protest. The people were saying that the Council had promised them jobs but when they got to the Town Hall, they were denied any opportunity. By nine in the morning, when we arrived at the Corozal Town Hall, there were just a handful of people waiting outside. Love News spoke with Mayor Hilberto Campos who explained that the situation was not exactly as it appeared or was initially reported.

Mayor Hilberto Campos
"We had been providing temporary jobs for people, causal workers, two or three weeks, that is throughout the year. What we did is that for the Christmas season to help the people to get a little more money we extended our hands even further and hired over 160 people but that was just temporary, that was just for two or three weeks. What happened is that after Christmas the same people that were working came out for the job and it wasn't there. We had it there it was temporary. The people came to the foreman and demanded that they wanted to work . I came here and dealt with them one by one."

The people were hired to clean overgrown lots, street shoulders, drains and street patching. Mayor Campos added that despite the incident, the council will be providing job opportunities, again on a temporary basis.
