WEEKLY WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR BELIZE
Valid: Valid: Sunday-Monday, Aug. 5-13, 2012

Here is the Weekly Outlook and an update of TS Ernesto ploughing westwards at 20 mph with max sustained winds of 50 mph at 3:00 pm this afternoon.

Expect torrential rainfall and TS force winds with this system on Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

RFrutos

The feature of interest this week will be the approach and landfall of tropical cyclone Ernesto along the northern coast of Belize on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning as a minimal hurricane. The GFS model cyclonic vorticity projection has the center of Ernesto moving across the central coast of Belize early on Wednesday. Although Ernesto is entraining dry air as it moves into the western Caribbean this evening, environmental conditions will still be favorable for the system to strengthen to hurricane intensity before making landfall over the northern or central coast of Belize. A strong windshear zone is evident in the extreme NW Caribbean and SE Gulf of Mexico, while a persistent high pressure ridge to the north of the western Caribbean will keep Ernesto on a westerly to west-northwesterly track, propelling the system towards the southern Yucatan-Belize coast. Regardless of where, along the coast of Belize, Ernesto makes landfall, tropical storm force winds will affect most areas of Belize, with hurricane force winds in a narrow zone near the center. Torrential rainfall will spread across the country by Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, with highest concentration projected over the north and central areas of the country. The instability will persist through Thursday until Saturday. So expect much rainfall this week, with a high potential of strong winds near where Ernesto makes landfall, and flooding in flood prone areas, including the Belize city area and surroundings!

Daily rainfall accumulations will range from 0.10-0.25 of-an-inch on Sunday and Monday. Rainfall rates will increase on Tuesday and Wednesday continuing through Thursday. Expect the highest rainfall amounts on Tuesday night through Thursday morning, with rates of 2-3 inches per day. Locally higher daily rates of 4-5 inches are expected in the elevated areas of the Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts. The northern sector of the mainland including the Belize District will also see high rainfall accumulations on Tuesday through Thursday, with totals of 2-3 inches per day. The rapid runoff will provoke localized flash floods in valley and hilly areas. Residence in flood prone zones should be prepared to move to safer areas!

Belize At The London Olympics
Belize's Kiana Martinez did not clock a personal record at the women's 100m race preliminary round during the 2012 London Olympics, but her time in Heat Two was still good enough to earn the inspirational sprinter a place in the first round of track and field's blue riband event. At around 3:45 this morning, Belize time, Martinez bolted a 100m distance to the finish line in 11.81 seconds. Martinez finished top two in her group which meant an automatic passage to the next round but in front of the packed Olympic Stadium, crammed with 80,000 spectators, Martinez was beaten to the finish line by Cameroon's Delphine Atangana with a time of 11.71 seconds. Martinez ran again this afternoon in the quarter finals in Heat 7 but sadly the young athlete was unable to keep up with the speed of her competitors and dropped out of the race. This time she ran to the finish line in 11.89 seconds while first place, Cote D'ivoire's, Murielle Ahoure sprinted with a time of 10.99 seconds. Kiana Martinez is 26 year old and is originally from the Stann Creek District. It's not the first time that this young athlete has represented Belize in the international stage. In 2012, Martinez participated in the 9th Central American Games in Panama and El Salvador in track and field. In 2011, Martinez travelled to San Jose Costa Rica for the Central American Chapter where she participated in the 100m, 200m and 400m race. That year the Belizean team brought back four gold and two bronze medals. Martinez surely made us proud!

DPM Says He Works Harder Than Most Belizeans
Last night in an impromptu press conference held in the community of Blue Creek, the Deputy Prime Minister of Belize Honorable Gaspar Vega, fielded questions from the media about the hundreds of acres of land he awarded to his family and close allies at a low cost. While for most Belizeans the process of owning a piece of land has proven costly and time consuming and sometimes even impossible, the same cannot be said about the family of the Deputy Prime Minister who own tracts of land all over the jewel. During the interview, Vega, without any remorse whatsoever, admitted giving several parcels of land to his daughter, brother, sister in law and several other members of the Vega clan. But the DPM is not afraid of the political repercussions that his decision might have, in fact he holds no remorse for his actions. Honorable Gaspar Vega- Deputy Prime Minister "I gave my daughter two house lots and one ten acre piece of farm land, I don't think there anything wrong with that, I myself don't see anything wrong with that, is not like I am giving her land to sell so that she could have a party or whatever the case maybe, I think she can built a house and eventually she can have a little farm and nothing wrong with that."

Peter Lacey- Organizer Sugar City Summer Program "The program was to prepare students going into infant I up to standard six in reading, phonics, creative writing, math and PSE preparation. The goal of the program is to keep the children sharp from the ending of the school year up to the beginning, some of the education is roughly about eight weeks and we successfully occupied the students five of those eight weeks, so the child's mind has been stimulated, it hasn't shut down for those five weeks so when they go back to school they are going to be fresh and they are going to be able to tackle the daily school work of the class that they are being promoted to." During the five week program Teacher Simone Meza was in charge of teaching students of the standard two and standard three level. According to Meza, the program brought to light some of the problems students are experiencing in reading and other subjects.

Four found guilty of money laundering
A jury of 7 women and 2 men deliberated for about 2 hours and 30 minutes before it found three men and one woman guilty of money laundering for $1.5 million. They are Michael Coye, his daughter Melonie Coye and the two messengers Atlee Matute and Dietrich Kingston. The Jury's verdict was not unanimous. It was in the proportion of 7 to 2. The trial judge, Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin, has deferred sentencing until Wednesday, August 8 in order to give the convicts time to prepare a plea for mitigation. The penalty for the offence is that the money will be forfeited to the Government of Belize and the maximum sentence can be a term of life imprisonment. The police found the money on December 31, 2008, when they executed a search warrant at the home of Michael Coye, located at 12 Johnson Street. The prescribed offence for money laundering was that the four forged a number of documents for which the names of the persons were put along with their purported signatures ffor that was purportedly sent to them through Money Gram Exchange, a company which Michael and Melonie were directors and shareholders. To prove its case, the prosecution called 18 witnesses. Among them some prominent citizens such as Bishop Phillip Wright, Sidney Sikaffy, Addie Castillo and Paul Rodriguez. The four accused gave statements for the dock in which they said that they were innocent. They were represented by attorneys Dickie Bradley, Arthur Saldivar and Brian Neal. The prosecution, The Financial Intelligence Unit, was represented by counsels Antonette Moore, Tricia Anderson and Patricia Arana. The trial was a retrial. The four along with three others were freed of the charge at the first trial. The three others were Michael's wife Marleni, his son, Jude and Melonie's husband, James Gerou. The FIU appealed the verdict of the first trial and Belize Court of Appeal allowed the appeal and ordered a retrial for four of the seven. .

Kaina Martinez gives it her all in London
And while all eyes are on the tropics and the progress of Tropical Storm Ernesto, attention shifted briefly this afternoon to London, England. That is where Belize's track athlete Kaina Martinez was making her Olympics debut. Martinez bolted to a second place finish in the women's one hundred meters preliminaries this morning, posting a time of eleven point eight one seconds. She was bested in the preliminaries by Delphine Atangana of Cameroon. In Heath Seven, just before one o'clock Belize time this afternoon, Kaina Martinez took her position in lane eight alongside the likes of Jamaica's Kerron Stewart and Laverne Jones Ferrette of the United States Virgin Islands. Belizeans watched as the race started and ended in roughly twelve seconds, with Martinez coming in at the tail end of an eight-athlete dash. Murielle Ahourie of the Ivory Coast placed first, setting a new record in the one hundred meters of ten point nine-nine seconds. Laverne Jones-Ferrette of the US Virgin Islands placed second, posting another new record of eleven point zero seven seconds. Traveling to the Toledo District & lovely Hickatee Cottages
After three great days at Mama Noots Eco Resort in Mayflower Bocawina National Park in the Stann Creek District of Belize, Friday morning, July 27, it was time to head even farther south to Punta Gorda (called "PG" by those in the know) in the Toledo District. This would be our first visit to this district, and we were excited to see it. From what we'd read, this is the wettest part of Belize, receiving about 160" of rain per year. As a result, it is lush and green -- a true tropical rainforest. We were lucky to catch a ride to the bus terminal in Dangriga with Shacka (sorry if I butchered that spelling!), Mama Noots' manager Liz's spouse, so we avoided a repeat of the 4+ mile hike to the road, plus any risk that the bus would not stop for us along the Southern Highway. It was a hot and sunny morning, so we were very thankful for the lift. Our bus ride was three and a half hours, and that is plenty of time to spend in an uncomfortable school bus seat in a crowded bus. We were very glad to arrive in PG, which is situated right along the Caribbean Sea, much like San Pedro. Unlike San Pedro, however, PG is not a "tourist town". This meant less traffic, which is always a good thing. We had reservations for three nights at Hickatee Cottages southwest of town, but we weren't sure exactly how to get there. As it turns out, Kate, one of the proprietors, had sent me a lovely map via email, but since I didn't have my laptop with me a couple of days earlier, I hadn't gotten it. I called and spoke to Ian, her husband, and he gave me directions over the phone. It was only a couple of miles, so even though he suggested we could catch a cab, we decided to walk it. We'd been sitting most of the day, so walking felt good, and it wasn't nearly so far as our 4.2-mile hike into Mama Noots.

A Day At Grand Caribe Resort
Yesterday I went up to Grand Caribe Resort to help out with a wedding. Just a few miles north of town and the bridge, Grand Caribe is actually quite easy and quick to travel to...by golf cart or by boat. Heck...these days you can actually take a taxi there. The road isn't bad at all... After helping wash and set up 60 or so chairs, I took a walk around the grounds. Here's what I've got for you... The place is huge and thoroughly modern by San Pedro standards where until a few years ago building was on a much smaller scale. The view from the pool. There are actually three pools. One big one with Cowboy Doug's Bar & Grill and then two smaller, more private ones. All were getting pretty full by the time I left...a big Costa Maya weekend crowd. Though most of the development is complete, there are one or two more buildings going up on the south side. And a pretty big sea wall. You can see the Ak'Bol dock (great for yoga, swimming and cheap food & drinks) and then the Palapa Bar in the distance. Easy walking distance. And definitely my two favorite docks on the island. We have had hot relentless sun for the past week...yesterday a few clouds started to fill in and there was a very brief sprinkle. It felt great.

Belize - A Colorful and Exotic Country in Central America
The fabulously colourful and exotic Central American nation of Belize is becoming a more popular vacation destination with North Americans, Brits and Europeans as it becomes more accessible and better known. It's a stunning Caribbean country with so much varied flora and fauna, with dramatic scenery, untouched coastline and a wealth of things to do and see - so much so that it's as popular today with backpackers as it is with families and it is as popular with the baby boomers as it is with young couples! A truly paradise nation, Belize is seriously worth consideration if you're after a bit of adventure tempered with a laid back lifestyle, and if you like to combine beachcombing with mountain climbing! In other words, there really is something for everyone in Belize and because the US dollar is pegged to the Belizean dollar, Americans will not find it expensive and British and European visitors will find it positively cheap! In terms of things to do in Belize - how about this for starters - you can explore the rainforest and share the experience with over 500 amazing species of wildlife. You can explore caves and Mayan ceremonial sites, you can island hop by boat, by canoe, kayak or even under your own swimming steam! You can sunbathe until sunset and then watch the sun setting over the ocean or from atop a mountain or a Maya temple. You can snorkel, learn to scuba dive and explore the stunning reefs around the country's coast, you can fish, hike, bike, be wined and dined and just fall in love with the culture, history and vibe in Belize.

12 Reasons Belize is a Best Place for Honeymoon Travel
Belize Honeymoon, Pre-Trip Planning and Packing, Race and Travel, Romance When Colin and I got engaged, we spent months agonizing over which country to travel to for our Honeymoon. At the last minute (read: two weeks before our epic wedding) I impluse-bought us two cheap plane tickets to Belize, a country I knew very little about. It turns out, Belize was a PERFECT Honeymoon destination for us. Bop through these 12 reasons why we loved Belize, and see if you might like it, too! 1. Belize travel is easy. I've voyaged all over the world, including destinations that are notoriously frustrating for tourists, and I declare Belize travel a smooth joy. It's not just that English is the official language, it's that Belize has invested real thought and effort into its tourist industry. Signs are clear, there's plenty of travel guidance online, and employees that we met from all levels of Belize's tourist industry were wonderful. Which leads to the next point
