Another group just returned from Mexico Rocks declaring it better than Hol Chan. This is becoming a regular occurrence. Their comments are, 'More marine life and less people'. The guides say, 'Better visibility and corals in good shape.'
Hol Chan Marine Reserve is experiencing a classic Approach Avoidance Conflict. That's a conflict when there is one goal or event that has both positive and negative effects or characteristics that make the goal appealing and unappealing simultaneously. In other words it attracts people for it's beauty but repels them because there are too many people. The Holidays are coming and it will become a zoo of tourist again. Hopefully the Tour Operators will send part of the Hol Chan load to Mexico Rocks this season and it can recover from its over-visitation stress.
