The season of sharing and giving, once again brought people together and sprinkled the love of Christmas. On Wednesday, December 23rd, the San Pedro Community Policing Unit, along with Britney O'Daniel from the San Pedro Food Bank, shared the Christmas cheer with as many residents as possible and distributed gifts and food. BPP statement on the rumoured destruction of rice
The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) vehemently objects to any assertion or intention by the Government of Belize, to destroy the containers of rice that have been a point of contention over the past several weeks. Belizeans from all corners of this nation who are facing economic hardships could certainly benefit from the distribution of this staple, via a coordinated and humanitarian effort. Undoubtedly, there are non-governmental organisations that can aid the distribution. We therefore call on Prime Minister Dean Oliver Barrow to reconsider any such move to lay waste to the shipments of rice.

Ministry of Agriculture Statement on Carrot Producers Situation
The importation of fresh vegetables is necessary to supplement domestic production as Belize does not have sufficient year round production. Importation is usually carefully timed to avoid oversupply or shortage of produce. There are periods when both imported and domestic products are on the market, usually at the start of or at the end of harvest. This period is most difficult to manage as a third factor -illegal contraband -imports also affect supply. This system of balanced importation is managed within the Ministry of Agriculture by the Chief Agriculture Officer and the Director of Extension. The current problem being experienced by the carrot producers in San Carlos, Orange Walk District is being thoroughly examined to determine the cause, the impact and corrective measures necessary. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development sincerely regrets any loss of production, especially to small farmers.

Snakeman Speaks! No More Tommy Goff!
No more poisonous snakes! That's what snakeman Gilbert Usher declared today at the KHMH. After five days in the hospital, Usher was finally able to speak to us about what happened last week Sunday. Usher told us he doesn't remember much - only that he had a Tommy Goff snake for 3 years and Sunday was the first time he took it out to show anyone. And that's the last thing he remembers. Today, Usher told us it will be the last time he takes that snake, or any other poisonous snake out, for that matter -because those days are over. Gilbert Usher, "I was bitten by Tommy Goff "There comes a time when yeah, if I keep dealing with venomous snakes, one day I might just cash out. I can't recall what happened. I had that snake for about 3 years."

Two Arrested For Killing Kinck for Money, One Is A Minor
3 days ago, we told you about very violent murder of Canadian Filmmaker Matthiew Klinck in a village just outside of Spanish Lookout, Cayo. Well, after 3 days of investigating, Police have arrested and charged 2 young men from San Ignacio for his murder. They are 19 year-old Brandon Anderson, and a 16 year-old minor, whose identity we cannot reveal. They have since been arraigned in Magistrate's Court, and as soon as police are able to make arrangements, they will be escorted to the Belize Central Prison. But, as viewers will recall, when Klinck's body was found, the police were concerned that it would be a very difficult investigation since Klinck lived on a very secluded property in Selena Village. So, what changed for investigators to progress to an arrest so swiftly? That's what our news team travelled San Ignacio Town to find out. We spoke with the lead investigator about the case today:

Stake Bank Sayonara?
Tonight, the cruise future for the Belize District is more unclear than ever - and that's because the Stake Bank project - which was thought to be a sure thing just a few months ago - is once again on the back burner - and the developer Mike Feinstein says he expects that it will stay there. And that's because government is now looking at another project - one that will be based at the Port of Belize. Now, if that sounds familiar, it is. In 2004, then Port owner Luke Espat and carnival Cruise Line broke ground for a port at that very spot. It never worked out, but what you see here now on the map - the part that juts out - is the product of that idea. That was supposed to be the apron for two ships which would pull up directly to the terminal - right there at the southeast end of Port Loyola. But, the project was effectively abandoned for a number of reasons. Well, now Government wants to resuscitate it, and with guess who? None other than Michael Ashcroft. That's right, reliable reports tell us that Ashcroft and the Government are looking at a possible partnership in the venture, which the Prime Minister mentioned only in passing in his New Year's address.

Mother And Family Car Jacked At Speedbump in Armenia Village
All this afternoon, Belmopan Investigators were out in Armenia Village following up on leads involving a crazy car jacking which happened last week Saturday. 38 year-old Melonie Popper Coc, a Puma Energy employee reported to police that at around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 2, she was driving her company vehicle, a grey Isuzu D-max pickup truck, along with her mother, and her 4 children. They were heading to Pomona Village, and when they arrived at the second bump in Armenia Village, which is 8 miles south of Belmopan on the Hummingbird Highway, she received a phone call. She told police that she stopped the vehicle and pulled off the road to answer the phone. While she was speaking with the caller, a man snuck up on her, and took away the cellphone at gunpoint. She reported that she looked over to the vehicle, and that's when she saw that her entire family had been removed from the vehicle by another car jacker. They ordered her out of the car, too, and then both men sped off towards Belmopan.

The World's Most Wanted, El Chapo Caught In Western Mexico
He was possibly the most wanted man in the world, and this afternoon news broke that Mexican authorities had caught Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa Cartel. The Mexican Navy led an operation at 4:30 this morning which found el Chapo in the town of "Los Mochis", which is on the west coast of Mexico in the state of Sinaloa. Reports from Mexico say it was a bloody raid and at least five of Chapo's men were killed. Five other men were arrested, and El Chapo was taken immediately to Mexico City for security reasons. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto broke the news with a Tweet saying, "Mission accomplished. We have him."

14 Homeless After Fire In Trailer Home
There was a fire last night in the Queen's Square area of Belize City, and, tonight, 14 people are homeless because of it. Now, with that many people left out of door, you might think that this was some big two-storey house - but it was just a decades-old trailer home. Here's what happened:... Shirley Flowers, Fire Victim "Well I feel the heat. I felt like I was already burn - I felt like I wanted to die." Jules Vasquez reporting It's very fortunate that no one did die - 14 people, 8 of them children were cramped inside this two bedroom trailer home last night at 9:30: Shirley Flowers, Fire Victim "By the time we reach out, the fire was already bolted out on the side and coming our way. But I hollered and told the kids to please hurry come out because its danger and we will get hurt. My stepdaughter ran back for my 5 year old baby. She managed to get her and so we came out."

7 Firemen Responded
The Fire Department can't be criticized for this fire; they only needed a few minutes to put it out. Station Chief Orin Smith told us more:.. Emanuel Pech "How many fire fighters were deployed and how long did it take to control off the flames?" Orin Smith, Station Manager, Belize National Fire Service "Seven. Only about 5 minutes after we arrived on the scene, the main body of the fire was already extinguished and map up process continued. Preliminary investigations reveal that the fire originated within the kitchen and as a result of a lit candle that had fallen over. We were very grateful that no one was hurt. Perhaps they may have taken quick action to evacuate the building when the fire was discovered. With that many persons in there, certainly the fire wouldn't have gone undiscovered. So that was very fortunate."

Every 93 Year Old's Dream: A Massive Weed Whacker
Only last week, 93 year old Patrick Grant was clinging to dear life after he was viciously attacked by one of his neighbors. Today Grant is back home at number 12 Fern Lane with no visible reminders of his ordeal other than a swollen left eye and a scab to the left side of his temple. In fact today seemed to be one of his happiest as he swung his brand new and rather large weed whacker with the kind of strength you wouldn't expect from a man in his 90's. Emanuel Pech has the full story:... Hope - that is what this simple weed trimmer has brought to this man, who two weeks ago was the victim of a vicious beat down. Today the Patrick Grant wore a big smile on his face; a sharp contrast from the face we first saw on the news. His excitement was unmistakable. After a quick breakfast, Grant was helped into his weed whacking attire. After his son in law struck up the weed whacker, Grant was off. It took a little while for him to get adjusted to the weight, but he was determined. Swinging his weed whacker to and fro he managed to trim at least 3 feet of grass before his first break. Patrick Grant - Beat Down Victim "Now I can keep my yard down the way it should be because back in this area there are lizards, there are snakes and everything. So once you got it like there, you're in danger or one of these insects, but with that I'll be free. I'll be most wonderful."

Four of Five Get Off For Vitalino Jr.
It made huge news in June of 2014 when six of Yohnny Rosado's employees from CaveTubing.com were accused of badly beating up their competitor's son, Vitalino Reyes Jr from Cavetubing.bz. Reyes Jr. ended up in a coma. Well, tonight, five of them are free. Charges of harm have been dropped against 43 year old Jimmy Cortez, 41 year old John Frazer, 24 year old Christopher Williams, 38 year old Evan Williams and 39 year old Keith Vairez. This happened during the Preliminary Inquiry and they were told they were free to go. So, the charge now only stands against 32 year old Leon Gentle. Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser told Gentle that one witness told police in his statement that he only saw Gentle beating up Reyes Jr. Gentle was offered bail of $6,000 which he met after told his case was committed to stand trial at the Supreme Court for the April 2016 session. Gentle had been initially charged for attempted murder, but that was downgraded to dangerous harm.

Recent Newsmakers Get Supreme Court Bail
Today, the Supreme Court granted bail to 6 persons, 4 of whom made our newscast within the last 3 weeks. They are Richard McDonald, who was charged with drug trafficking of over 11 kilos of heroine - valued at possibly a over a 1 million US Dollars; Police Constable Luke Moreira who was charged for allegedly raping Vanessa Evans in the San Ignacio Police Station; Police Constable Kyle Serrano who was charged with 3 counts sexual assault against a 13 year-old girl in San Pedro; Denfield Davis, who was charged with 4 counts of unlawful sexual intercourse; Ariece Martinez who was charged for handling stolen goods, and Angel Ruiz, who was charged with keeping an unlicensed firearm. San Carlos Carrots Crisis: Ministry Says It Wants To Help
Yesterday we gave you a snippet of the expedition to the farms of San Carlos Village where trouble is brewing for carrot farmers. Today the Ministry of Agriculture sent out a release saying that the matter is being thoroughly examined to determine the best course of action. We spoke to the Chief Agriculture officer via phone who explained the Ministry's position in further detail. But before we get into that interview we will revisit the farmers' side of the story. According to the farmers of San Carlos, Orange Walk, some $30 thousand dollars' worth of carrots currently sit on their farms. Out of this some $20 thousand dollars' worth of these carrots are already going bad. This is because of the local market is saturated with carrots - and they say the culprit is the importation of legal and illegal carrots.

A Tale Of Two Accidents
There was an accident this afternoon at mile 3 and a half on the Northern Highway. Mark Sutherland was heading to the city in this white truck when his back tire blew out. The truck then flipped and ended up in the drain. The driver, along with the 2 passengers Glenda Torres and Lloyd Myvette are lucky to be alive - they only received minor injuries. And this morning in Belize City, a Crystal Water truck tore up the side of a Nissan Frontier. The truck was approaching the Cemetery Road Roundabout when the Frontier seemed to be trying to overtake inside the roundabout. When the water truck made a wide turn, it bushed the Frontier unto the sidewalk. No one was hurt, but it did stop traffic.

Briceno Says 20 Year Old Price Push-Out Letter is Fake
The race for PUP Leadership is heating up - and the campaign's getting dirty on Facebook. Today, opponents of John Briceno - and we're not sure which ones - circulated a letter that's almost 20 years old! Dated August of 1996, Briceno writes to George Price, then leader of the PUP. In it, the letter writer urges Price to step aside and let Deputy Leader Said Musa step up. The writer says, quote, "with all respect to you, I feel that now is the time to hand over the reins to our Deputy Leader said Musa." End quote. Now, in the PUP - anything to offend the venerated Mr Price is seen as a cardinal offence - and we imagine those who posted the old letter on Facebook are tying to make the case that Brceno is not loyal. We asked Briceno about it today and he said that the letter was a fake in 1996, and it is still so now. He says he had nothing to do with it. He says whoever sent it out this time is grabbing unto straws.
