From Saturday, April 23 to Sunday, April 24, participants in the 1st Annual Ambergris Caye Lagoon-Reef Eco-Challenge will be testing their strength and speed while enjoying a beautiful trip through mangrove creek and lagoon and reef ecosystems. Green Reef is organizing the race in order to promote conservation and ecotourism in the mangroves and reefs in Ambergris Caye. Two person kayaks in Men's, Women's, and Mixed categories will race from San Pedro north through the lagoon into the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and will end the first day at Tranquility Bay Resort at Basil Jones. After camping out at Basil Jones, participants will sprint to the finish line at the 9th Annual Reef Festival at Mar de Tumbo beach.



The registration fee is $50 per team. Green Reef is providing kayaks and paddles to all participants, as well as breakfast, water, and snacks. At Basil Jones, there will be a BBQ for the participants. There are several station prizes including $250 from Reef Radio and $1,000 from Tranquility Bay Resort as well as a grand prize for each category. After finishing the race, participants will be able to join the San Pedro community in celebrating the reef at the Reef Festival, which will have displays from San Pedro primary schools, Hol Chan and Bacalar Chico Marine Reserves, glass bottom boat rides, children's games, music, food, and a lot of fun.
