We have just begun our research into various places to stay in Ambergris Caye, originally for September but then on the website it said that that was mosquito season, so now we're thinking early December when it's supposed to be the "cool" season, but prior to the increased prices of high season.

I've read thro' some posts here and I had actually written to the hotel to find out if you COULD swim from the beach. Their web page showed a magnificent swimming pool, so that made me wonder if they were ON the beach, and if so, whether it was swimmable from shore as they have a pier.

If anyone could give me any information about this property, or suggest another, I'd really appreciate it. This one took my fancy because it's only got 48 rooms and we prefer to go to small, non commercialised type properties.

They did tell me there were about 4-6 restaurants within walking distance, but didn't list which ones, so if anyone knows, I'd appreciate that info too. We're more sailors than divers, but I'll be up for snorkelling, and we'll both be ready to just hang out on the beach, so pretty low maintenance!

If there are things that we just shouldn't miss when we go to AC, I'd love to hear about those also.

My husband and I stayed there last May. We were looking for some much needed R&R, and wanted a place that looked a bit more private and not real close to town. This was PERFECT for us. The pool is even nicer then the pictures. I didn't swim from the beach, but did swim around a bit at the end of the pier. You wonít want to go out much from the pier, as boats come and go from town. The suite we stayed in was the first one on the left, closet to the ocean. It is "right on the beach" - enjoyed our morning coffee on the balcony as we watched a new day begin.

We did walk to town once, it was a longggggg (Longgggg!) stroll, and opted to take the water taxi back. We also rented a golf cart to go back and forth or you could rent bikes in town.

The only restaurant that we ate at near by (other then the Laguna Grill that is there on the property) was Sweet Basil and also had Pauly's (think that it's name) pizza delivered one night. The other nights we ate in town, and again, used the water taxi. Had a nice meal at Sweet Basil, GREAT dessert. Thought that I read where itís for sale, not sure.

The suite was wonderful, not a complaint from us at all. The restaurant at the resort was so-so, but it could have been an off night. The drinks were good, the staff was more then pleasant and it has a nice view. Also, there is a computer at the back of the dining room if you need to check with folks back home. Canít recall how much it cost.

Think that about covers it. Your biggest decision is how close you want to be to town, and that depends if you're "night people" and want to try out the bars.

There is also a coin operated washer and dryer on site - came in handy.

You'll fall in love with AC no matter where you stay. laugh

Every beach "up North" is increadable..inculding Belizean Shores, hit them all.
But the pool...Wow! Biggest pool I have seen on AC, has a swim up bar, an infinity pool, with seats to sit on in the water, and around, with moveable umbrellas, a hot tub inside the middle of the pool....have to ask bartender to turn it on if no one is using it. Don't be shy!
We own south, but when we want to pamper, south is Ramons and North is Belizean Shores. Even if you decide not to stay there, you have to spend a day at the infinity pool!!!!!!!!! Take a book, have drinks and lunch brought to you at your beach chair in the water! Absolute best AC has to offer as far as pools!

Thanks guys for the really informative replies to my question, but of course, overnight I've come up with more!!

I've been reading about seawalls on some beaches and not others, and someone recommended checking with the hotel as to whether they had a seawall or whether you could just walk right into the water.

Our main concern is that my husband doesn't swim but likes to walk in the water up to about bottom of his ribcage, so we wondered how deep the water is at the end of the pier at Belizean Shores? He doesn't want to jump in up to his neck, but rather wade out to a depth he feels comfortable in.

I know you said the piers are a bit hazardous because of the boats, but I think the hotel said they have an area of the beach roped off to keep the boats out and keep it safe for swimmers.

So in a nutshell I guess I'm asking the following:

Can you walk straight off the beach into ankle deep water?

How deep is the water at the end of the pool?

Is there sea grass on the Belizean Shores beach? There's some confusion as someone said the hotels clear all the beach grass, but other people are recommending water shoes.

We're not into late nights, but usually head somewhere for a nice dinner one night when we're away, so it sounds like Belizean Shores would be okay for us.

Is there another small hotel on the island that anyone would recommend over the Belizean Shores, that might have a walk in beach, no sea grass, and at the same time be small?

Would anyone recommend September over December or vice versa (the in between months are not possible b/c of work schedules).

Thanks for your help.

Check out the Villas at Banyon Bay!!! South of town and everything you want. Nice beach that your hubby can walk into and the pool is VERY nice. Great restaurant on site, Ricos.

We just returned from Belize early this morning. We stayed at Ramons for one week and loved it there. You can walk into the water there, there is no sea wall and the sea grass is trimmed back. The staff there was wonderful and we had a great time. You can walk right into town from there or take a golf cart and go up North. It is also right next to the Blue Water Grill, a great place to eat.

Just returned from Belizean Shores the first and second week of April and loved it. Its a small resort with only 48 rooms but the rooms are large and spacious. I would consider all of the rooms to be in good locations. The pool goes from zero entry to about 8' deep at one end. It is very large. There is sea grass just about every where and Belizean Shores does a great job raking it up. You can wade into the water right from the shore if a little sea grass doesn't bother you. There are plenty of places within walking distance to eat but we usually ended up going into town by water taxi. Each unit comes with a full kitchen and we took advantage of SimonBs grocery service to stock our unit before we arrived. His service is awesome and well worth it. When we walked into our unit the kitchen was fully stocked with the items we sent him and plenty of cold Belikins were in the fridge. The staff at BS are great and Leo will serve you excellent drinks at the pool bar.

Glad to hear you and the Queen had a good time. We look forward to hearing more about the trip soon.

As far as we are concerned, BS is the perfect way to spend a week on AC. laugh

December is better than Sept. however it can be a little cool sometimes. Belizean Shores is a looong way from town. We prefer closer places if you want a variety of dining choices that the town offers. We just found that we preferred to eat out in the evening and that meant going to town. I suggest Ramones over Banyan Bay. It's right in town and across the street from the airport. We stay at Sunbreeze next door, but it's a motel with no kitchen.

Swimming on the beach anywhere on AC is not the greatest thing to do. Some properties do a beter job at beach cleaning than others, but there is sea grass everywhere. The beach in AC is more of a lagoon beach with little wave action the keep it clean beacuse of the reef.
