I can't believe how fast that baby went up! I guess when there's big money backing things up, things go a little faster! Perfect timing since our condo under construction is just a couple hundred yards North of the cut! Don't kow if that increased the value of our property or not. Is there much of an arch to it? We'll test it out when we arrive next Wednesday.

We were at Hammock House on July 3rd - the hand ferry was still running and it didn't look like much had been done towards building the bridge.
If they do charge to go over the bridge - I hope that the fees are posted so you don't get charged mystery amounts for crossing like you do when you use the ferry. You never know how much it's going to cost you!

We stayed up north in Dec. and regardless of what is posted they charge what they want to, the fee was not consistant with what was posted. Sometimes we were not charged at all during the day and sometimes we were (with or without cart). Most times at night it was usually a one time fee for round trip other times we were not charged. Last week we we're charged (at night)$1 over and $1 back, I don't recall being charged a "back" fee prior visits.

It's always been double after 8pm and unless the sign was removed very recently it's posted as well.

During the day if you're on foot you rarely get charged, it's more of an honor system. I've never seen a golf cart not get charged.

I for one can't wait to see a bridge installed as long as it has a 24 hour manned police substation on site. The ferry is a real hassle for those of us who have to get to the north side to make a living. I've had round trips that should have taken a 1/2 hour take over 2 hours just because of the ferry. That's fine if you're just heading home but not when you have a tight schedule to keep.

Having fun???
I guess you should count your blessing for every time you crossed and were not charged.
For those of you who are less suspicious – it is supposedly B $1.00 for pedestrians and BZ $10.00 round trip. Beware that round trip is considered the same day.

The only time I heard of a rip off was when friends bought a round trip going north one night and tried to use it coming south the next morning. They would not honor it.
Those of us who use the ferry a lot buy a monthly pass for BZ $150.00.

These are the rates the town board charges from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Other hours it is run by private enterprise and is BZ $10.00 each way for golf carts and they do charge the BZ $1.00 for pedestrians. That is one of the reasons that from 6:00 AM until 7:00 AM the ferry is packed with workers heading north. Anyone with a golf cart should not even think about trying to get on. The same is true from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM coming south when the workers come back. ONLY when the police are there monitoring the traffic do they obey the posted rule “golf carts on first.”

The only pedestrians I ever see pay are tourists. I have never seen a bicycle pay even though they consistently crowd in front of the golf carts. It will be curious to see if, when (and if), the bridge is opened they will start charging these free loaders.

So, HavinFun,
On July 11th, after reading your post and writing a response I think I met you. Were you here on the island then?
If not you then there was this 80 pound little gringo bitch with the big mouth that would not shut and gave the woman at the pull ferry all the lines you used. She was holding up everyone from the south side trying to get onto the ramp. I finally told her what I told you – count your blessings for all the times you didn’t pay and quit giving us gringo’s bad names.

About progress on the bridge – I have been told that those three lots have been cleared so the entry ramp can be built. I don’t believe anything until I see it. I have also been told that the steel struts are being built in England.

Yes, she may have some ideas that some of us do not agree with......but she speaks her mind.......she's a resident and wants to see visitors respect what the Island has to offer. I'm not that sure that we need a bridge. I figure that, if I can get full throttle and no potholes from Dreadies place, I should be able to clear the cut with a piece of plywood, a skid and a couple of cement blocks for the ramp. AS POSTED BY C.S. "Sorry, I am only trying to get real facts concerning Bridge."

At the risk of stepping it in – again – I need to ask Corona Steve a question: Just what is your interest in the bridge? You have challenged a few people here and I have to wonder what your agenda is? I have actually spent the time to go back through and read all of your posts and I don’t get it. It looks like you have been to A/C once and now want to see changes.

I could afford to spend the time on line searching this thread because I am NOT in Belize right now paying the high price for internet time. I went to Belize the first time in 1998 and made 8 trips there before I moved permanently two years ago. I chose to live on the north end to get away from the noise, traffic and dust in town. I have become an active member of the North Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch Association and have made many friends up north; they are a great bunch of people.

Most of them spent years fighting AGAINST a bridge. Only last year did they start agreeing that the traffic jams at the pull ferry were getting so frustrating that MAYBE a bridge could help. In fact, one of my neighbors, who is an engineer, designed a floating bridge that could have been built for little money and very quickly. Those of us who live up here even offered to pay for it. This would have been as high as the metal bridge they are supposedly building so all of the same boats could have gone under it. However, it could have been detached from either end and ‘swung’ out of the way for taller boats.

The government, being what it is, would not let us do this. I will not comment on my opinion about why. (See I can learn). That bridge could have been in operation for some time now. It definitely would not have been big enough for anything other than golf carts. For some strange reason some of us do not trust that a bridge with a little toll both separating the two lanes will be a fact. Already extra wide ATV are using the pull ferry and these will not fit on smaller lanes.

The resorts up north used to provide transportation by boat several times a day to their guests. Some still do. However, many of them have seen a benefit to renting golf carts to their unsuspecting guest thereby making money and saving money on gasoline for the boats. I don’t blame them; just good business. But it has increased the traffic.

Many developers, including the one I bought from, have their materials barged up with Bob Cats and dump trucks on the barge. These then fill up and lumber down our ‘non-roads.’ The ruts they cut into the sand fill up with every rain and become difficult if not impossible to get a golf cart through.

There is so much development going on up north that the commute traffic is hard to imagine. The workers, on their bicycles and on foot, crowd in front of the golf carts at the ferry and the carts can get very backed up causing delays of over an hour. The altercations became so heated that we hired the police to control the traffic from 4 to 6 PM. Of course when they are needed someplace else they go. Then it is back to a free for all.

Ask any government official about the road up north and they will tell you there is no road up north. There is ‘The Queens Way” which is a 35’ width along the beach. A few years back some of the developers along what is called Bob’s Flats built the road along the lagoon side of that stretch to get the few golf carts from coming up the beach. I may be wrong, but I have been told that the residents are the ones who buy the materials and supply the labor for the constant job of repairing the NO Road. I do know that we (residents and Chamber of Commerce) all paid a guy named Casey to build the new ramp on the north side.

So Corona Steve, as you see you waded into a very controversial subject. Then you wonder why you are not taken seriously. The bridge issue is a hot button pusher. It is easier to make jokes about it than express our true feelings and get attacked. My personal bottom line is ‘What’s in it for you?” This is a question for everyone, no matter which of the many sides of the issue you are on.

To clear up some info for ScubaLady.
I have had a dream of living in Belize for over 15 years, and now have invested in property in the north, 6 lots, almost 5 acres.
Went to Belize first time on cruise ship 2 years ago. Belize City did not stop my dream, as I knew there was lots more than this.
Have been going to SP almost every other month since beginning of year. Spent hard earned money to fill this dream, with purchase of property, along with freinds, with one of them already building a resort, Brightwater Beach Resort, one of the finer resorts , though small compared to others, but quality, check it out.
The bridge is very important for controlled dev. along with a road to the north. Done right it would mean a lot, to those who also want both, a place to live full time, and create a business, to have a income. I do not have the money to move and retire on pension. I wish those well, who can retire, and not have to worry, but I need a income producing business, one who will benefit the north.
I for one welcome the 300 room resort, if developed properly.
Hope this response will take care all concerned.
I will try and keep both Bridge Cut, Roads north, and 300 room resort at top of boards discussion.

CS, the attitude displayed in your post is not the way to "get your way" in Belize (or any place else). Showing up on someone's doorstep and telling them that you are going to change their whole enviroment and lifestyle, and then suggesting that you are doing it for their benefit is not likely to be well received (it is obvious from your post exactly who is going to benefit). I have only called Belize my second home for about 3-1/2 years, but in that short time I have seen people bring that exact same attitude to Belize, and it hasn't worked yet.

KC, I am not trying to get my way, by all means, I only think, it best for all, and the development of the North. There is nothing wrong with progress, if done in the right way. I am not trying to make the North a major commercial district, but rather a more accessable form of movment for residences, We are talking about a Bridge, verses a barge, for ease of getting to a destination, with the local water taxi, as a option for both residences, and visitors.
You have a right to state your opinion, and what you would like to see happen, but I also have that right, as a property owner in the North.
If this chat room would treat this subject as a real method to state there opinion, and not use it for pleasure, maybe we could resolve differences of opinion, and what they envision the final outcome of the North would be like.
I have read many persons making odd coments about the 300 room resort. Resorts will be built, and there is no way of stopping this development, but if we treat this as a way of controlling it, to preserve the best the North has to offer, we can maintain the North and still see good development.
The talk of WalMart, the chicken place, Taco Bell, and not to mention the Krispy Kream, than, I believe, this chat room is out of touch. Lets get serious about this and other situations which will determine the grouth of all of SP.

Quick note regarding insurance. You CAN get insurance on wooden structures here on the island. The insurance companies are careful regarding WHOM they decide to insure. And obviously, if you have wooden/thatch building next to the hottest barbeque and grill spot in town, you might possibly not get coverage.

There are some basic critia that you need to fulfil in order to be covered - such as not storing gasoline in the building, maintaining required building set-backs, pruning trees, having a fire extinguisher on site etc.

I had a wooden house for 10 years that was insured. After hurricane Keith my house had some damage. The insurance company paid me for my claim within 4 days of my claim - which went in less than 2 weeks after the storm. And, when it came time for renewal I was still covered. I have subsequently sold the house - and the new owners also have the house insured.

Just wanted to dispel this strange myth.

Yes you can get insurance on concrete condos. We typically purchase an All Perils Insurance Policy which covers, fire, flood, hurricane/windstorm, aircraft and road vehicular impact, earthquake, volcanic eruptions etc.

Cost is about $12 per thousand for concrete and $15 per thousand for wood**** I am quoting from memory, but should be fairly accurate.

I just returned from AC last night. I have seen with my own eyes the plans for the bridge. I have spoken to the ones who will be building the bridge, and those who own the properties surrounding the propsed bridge areas on the Northern side of the cut. While we were there, we watched the pilings being put into the ground to support the ferry operation while the bridge is being erected. The work is underway. We all know it will take a very long time to get the bridge completed, but at least it is in the works, in that, we can actually see progress now. Now, of course there will be those who oppose the bridge, and those who think it will be the best thing since sunshine. I, for one, am happy it's going in, and after it's in, perhaps the roads will get the attention they need. Maybe not. And, while I was there, we took a cart as far north as we could go, and the roads are in as poor condition as they ever were, but not much worse than they were on our last trip. And...there wasn't ANY "Black Goop" on the roads, and from where I saw it, the rainy season had more to do with the pot holes....not the construction. I saw the "front end loader" scraping the road after a rain, and thought it was doing a nice job...of course, it won't last, but it was at least an effort. We also drove as far South as we could, past the end of the utilities, and the road is wonderful, and, traveled by heavy trucks and construction equipment. This is the area where the dredging is most active, and it has improved the roads. What's up with that??? Perhaps the private sector is contributing to the problem more than they want to admit, and looking to the developers to place the blame. Seems to me there are an awful lot of unhappy people living in paradise, and just need something to gripe about. I'm hoping it's not catching. But, please, given how everyone allows "Island Time" to dictate the length of time it takes to get anything done, it would be nice to allow that time for everything, not just what YOU want. I can buy a box of 400 popote (straws)at the local store. If I kick in another case of beer that will only be 389 to 48 beers. Could work. Jess, don't forget a lot of the folks that said they want to share actual live on the message board and will only be with us in spirit - not physically. I think the list is Jesse, Cal, Me, Reaper, Capt Jeff so far. And 48 bottles of beer on the wall.

Thats about 8 straws per bottle...that could work as long as we don't have any backflow problems.

Maybe Corona Steve will join us with a few more cases to enjoy his "good fortune"! Where will we hold the awards night? Poolside or an establishment. If we get a large crowd we'll just have to go over to Barry's house and get the keys to the cooler!!! cool

For all concerned, please re read Sun & Sand, makes a good point concerning Road North.
On party, I will be back in early Nov.,otherwise, give party date, and I will try and make it, and will add to the boooty of beer. A great celebration, for those who look forward to controled dev.
I also have been to Cabo San Lucas, great place, and yes, there, I knew it would dev., but do not know what it looks like today.
Everyone have a great weekend.
