Another topic is what underwater camera is a good one. There is a Pentex which goes no further than 5 feet. It's compact however the need for one when diving lower would be more beneficial. Any recommendations? I just purchased the book "Travel by Bus in Mexico".

Also is rum the choice of drink in the Caye? Where are some nice places to have a cocktail at the end of a day?

If you don't want to buy a fancy camera, you can buy "throw away" underwater cameras. I found them at Coconuts, the internet place. They actually work pretty good. As I recall not that expensive either. The rum there is wonderful...One Barrel. They mix it with fresh juice or whatever you want. You can find many nice places along the beach to enjoy such drinks. Have a ball.

Good Idea - din't know you could use a camera? How far does it go down?

Also, I'm taking the classroom PADI course here in October then will take the open water in the Caye. What dive shop would give the best rates along with being reputable?

tweedybear, I'm going to suggest that you use the search function, you'll find answers to all your questions that way.

Go to the top right side of this page, about 1 inch down you'll see the search link. From there just key in your search time et voila!

I wouldn't try taking that throw away much deeper than 12 ft

MonaLisa posted a site for her trip pictures in Feb this year. The underwater pictures were fabulous. She used a Sea & Sea underwater camera(approx. 350 to 450 on internet).
We've used disposables and they are ok(very exp. on AC) but the pictures don't have the depth or clarity like MonaLisa's.

Time flys - have fun!

I have a Reefmaster (film) which is good to 160 ft. Have used it for several years and think it takes very good underwater pics.

I've got a Canon S50 digital camera and as soon as I booked my trip, the next thing I did was buy a waterproof case so I can take it snorkeling with me... outside when it rains... on the tubing/caving trips... basically where ever I decide to go. I've tried the disposable cameras while snorkeling in the Florida Keys but wasn't happy with the results - that and they can be quite expensive... about $15Cdn.. so if you like to take lots of pics it can really add up.

There are disposables rated to 90 feet if you want just snapshot quality. Try your local dive shop or on line. Also you could try renting from Protech to get the feel of a real underwater camera before shelling out the big bucks. Plus they'll give you pointers for taking decent shots
