A Plague of Postal No-Shows

Residents across Belize are reporting record numbers of items "lost in
the mail" during the months of June and July.

Unhappy postal customers in Corozal, Orange Walk, San Ignacio and
Placencia report waiting in excess of 8 weeks for airmailed items from
the United States. The unusually long delivery times have affected
business mail, parcels and periodicals.

U.S. postal officials report business as usual in air mail service, and
claim that items are not delayed in reaching Belize; presumably, then,
the problem is somewhere in the bowels of the Belize postal service.

Belize Bank officials advise that if you have waited more than 6 weeks
to receive a check, you should stop payment on the check and arrange an
alternate method for fund transfers until the local postal problems are
cleared up.

Last fall I mailed a package from CA to San Pedro. Six weeks later I was on the island, and the package had not arrived. I went to the post office and asked the postal worker if there was any way to check on it, and he announced that it was probably the U.S. Mail that was delaying the arrival. I didn't see any point in contradicting him, so I just left. The next day my Belizean friend went to the post office and asked about the package (it was addressed to her). The package was produced from the back room where it had been sitting for the past three weeks. That darn U.S. mail system! eek

I mailed post cards from San Ignacio in mid January. My mom received hers on April 16, my grandkids got theirs on April 18. I thought it was just mine!

I was going to email the San Pedro Sun about not getting my paper, but no use. Will just read it when it arrives, hope I do not have to wait 4 mns. like Suzy

Took nearly 5 months for post cards from San Pedro to relatives in Texas in 2000!
Sounds like business as usual in Belize.
Gotta love that Island life!

When sending mail from the US to Belize, it is helpful to address it like this:

Belize, Central America.

If you fail to indicate "Central America" sometimes the US postal workers send it to some pretty amazing places other than Belize.

If you abreviate Central America as "CA" - your mail will likely go first to Venezuela, because there is a large state in that country with the abreviation CA.

I have received late-mail that has been mis-sent to Benen; Equador; Venezuela.

I send packages to Belize from the US often. I spend more to send them express that way I can track the package. The last few have arrived within 3-5 business days. Before I started doing it that way, a package I mailed in Feb didn't arrive until April! So, to me it is well worth the money!

Damn, I wish I could just mail myself there! wink wink laugh

I mailed three packages at once. Two were to one person in Belize City, one was for a friend on the island. The person in Belize City received the first package within a week. The second one took two months. The package going to San Pedro took 6 weeks. All were mailed as
air parcel post which was 5-10 business days....so much for that!

HUH, Diane is correct to put Central America.

I have beeen sent mail every week here from the two areas in the US and it has taken 9-11 days for each piece of mail. I also send mail there each week and it has taken 7-10 days to reach the states.
