23 days and counting until I arrive... went to a travel clinic today to see a man about some anti-malarials (spending some time in Guatemala, better to be safe than sorry). I told him that's all I wanted, but ended up getting the whole spiel about needing Hep A & B, diptheria, etc... In the end I walked out with an rx for Cipro and an anti-malarial and refused the shots (visit cost $45 instead of $130). I know travel is their only business, but was it just me or were they trying to get me to take stuff I didn't really need? I've got 3 weeks left, so I still have time to get it if I do need it.

we got 'em all before our first trip - CDC recommends the shots and our Dr. said it was a good idea to stay updated, that current Tetnus is always a good idea, the Hep shots made sense, so we just got them all
Fortunate for us - insurance covered the cost

You should have got the hep shots.

We've been to AC five times, and Guatemala once...never had any shots/pills. We're bringing our parents (in their 70s) to San Pedro for ten days in January. Any thoughts on whether they should get shots/pills? Thanks.

Your doctor should make that determination. Unless there's a tropical diseases specialist on the board no one here is qualified to tell you whether or not a 70+ year old should be getting their shots or not.

Simon's correct - check the CDC website and then talk to your doctor.

We'll be in Belize. While at Kaiser several days ago, they have travel maps with what shots to get. Since we've had none, we got the typhoid injection along with malaria pills to take a week before. We haven't had shots in years. Better to be safe and A.C. was shown for typhoid/malaria. People who take cruises never get their shots according to Kaiser (where I was) they've been safe however I would recommend to be current.

Hell, when I saw the topic "recommended shots" I thought that there was a new Rum on the market... oh well...

LOL Sorry for the unintentional deception, PlacidGuy. Feel free to post thoughts on your interpretation too, though... that will also come in handy. :-)
