We have been looking around at some of the budget places on Ambergris - several without websites - anyone have any input on what's reasonable for the money - where absolutely to not go.... We're leaving in less than two weeks so we're not overly picky....

what are you looking for in the place you stay? Ruby's is great for the price, very basic and budget lodging.

Spindrifts is fantastic, just about $20-22 more per night and very spacious, clean, nice rooms. VERY nice staff there too. Though Ruby's has a nice staff and great little cafe.

They are about 3 doors apart so wherever you stay you should walk to Ruby's cafe to grab a tasty and affordable breakfast.

One of my favorite budget hotels is Lili's , close to the center of town and right on the beach. I always recommend first timers stay around town to get the full effect of San Pedro. I belive the rooms are around $65 US in the high season, another one a couple doors down is the Conch Shell.

I stayed at the Conch Shell a few years back and it worked out great. Nothing fancy (similar to Motel 6) but only paid $25/nt. Since Amigo Del Mar was right in front, it made getting my dive gear to the boat very easy.

Am looking to book another trip, but the old email address doesn't work. Anyone have Conch Shell's current contact info?

Here's a web site for ideas. We stayed at Holiday Hotel in 1998, our first time to Belize (Ambergris Caye). It was in town, close to everything, one room, no TV or pool, but clean. The second time we stayed at Playador now known as Exotic Caye's Hotel. They have nice cabanas, pool and nice beach. It's about 1/4 mile from town (within walking distance). We've made eight trips in all. Since then we bought a condo at Belize Yacht Club, but rent it out year round to a nice couple who live there, so we stay at another unit. It's quite there, a small pool but no real beach. Ramon's is nice with a good size beach. Banana Beach or Sunbreeze Hotel are also good choices.

Then there is Caye Caulker, which is years behind Ambergris Caye. Very laid back small island village. Caye Caulker, Belize - Vacation Travel Information <http://www.belize-vacation.com/caye-caulker/caye-caulker.htm>

Not sure what your idea of budget is, but I just got back from a 2 week trip to Belize and Guatemala and for my 9 days on AC stayed at Banana Beach... I think their summer package was 7 nights for $399 (single occupancy). Can't go wrong for about $55/night. Not sure how long those rates go for or what the other season's rates are, but it's a great value for your money either way... 2 pools, nice "beach", also includes breakfast.
