I went on a day trip with Seaduced one year. We went to the sanctuary first, and stopped the boat, waited a while and then saw these "noses" gradually pop up to the surface. We had 3 or 4 Manatees curiously checking us out. We were quiet, didn't stay too long and carefully left without disturbing/hurting them. Then we motored over to a tiny island for BBQ and Snorkel. It was one of the best outings I've had out at sea.

They did not, however, guarantee you would see any Manatees - we were fortunate, so I'm told. This was back in December of 2001 - so I'm not sure what you will encounter now.

Personally, I think, as the Capt would say, the juice is not worth the squeeze. Better ways to spend yout tour time.

Hi Kristykins,

My husband and I looked into the manatee tour before heading to Belize last year. They are highly protected - which is great, but you are not allowed in the water near or with them.

If you're really into manatees - as I am - save up your pennies and take a trip to Crystal Springs Florida in the winter. It is a reserve, and the manatees hang out there in the winter due to the warm springs that keep the water at 72+. You can snorkel the area, and we saw several manatees - right up close. A mother and calf swam right by me. It was an amazing experience.

There are plenty of other cool things to do and see in Belize.

I've done the manatee outing twice, on two different trips to Belize. We saw a few manatees stick their noses up on the first one, but didn't see anything on the second one. The place you stop to look for them is sheltered from the breeze, and since you are not moving very fast, it can get pretty hot. I like this outing because of the boat ride, the island picnic, snorkelling, and the stop at Caye Caulker. If they left out the manatee stop I wouldn't be disappointed.

We went on the manatee trip with Searious last February, and loved it. We saw several manatees, they came up right next to the boat and swam under and around us. The crew shut the motors down once we were in the sanctuary, so we were just floating and watching. It was a beautiful day.
