#111937 - 12/01/05 06:00 PM Snorkelling gear provided?
Moon Offline
I was just reading through some of the pages about the various snorkelling locations and it mentions that trips to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley are around $20-$25 and that snorkelling gear is included in that price? Could someone let me know if this is so, or whether I do have to bring my own gear? Those flippers take up quite a bit of room, so if the gear is available, I think I'd just as soon not take my stuff with me.

gear is available there, and has always been in good shape. But every time we've gone the gear rental was in addition to the trip fee - usually about $7US. there's also a park entrance fee for the marine reserve at Hol Chan - so the entire trip ends up being about $35US.

We rented gear the first trip. It was in pretty good condition, but the more I thought about how many mouths that snorkel had been in.... Second trip we brought our own. This time we'll bring snorkels and masks and rent fins to save space.

probably so - but I'm the kind that lets my dog lick me in the face - so not big on my worry list wink

and if my dog was the last one to use the rental gear, I'd have no problem with it either wink . Its the thought of strangers that used it previously makes me queasy. eek

Right, you know where your dogs lips have been. It's people that have bad habits...

I'm not obsessive-compulsive, honest. I could just hear my mother telling me when I was a kid, "Don't put that in your mouth, you don't know where it's been!" The same mother sitting beside me on the boat, I might add, who had no problem whatsoever popping that rented snorkel right into her mouth.

Yeah, I went and bought a snorkel & mask last weekend for that same reason. Not to mention I didn't want to face a potential leaking mask or anything like that. We'll just rent fins. Plus we can jump off the piers and snorkel on our own time if we choose to smile an added bonus.

I know where my ‘male’ dogs tongue has been and I don’t let him lick my mouth!
If you really don’t want to pack mask & snorkel (or pay the price for something you will use one a year) go to your local dive shop and buy a new mouth piece. The dive operator will be happy to put it on one of their snorkels if you tell them you are ‘donating’ it to them. I suggest you mark it in a way that you know that you will get it each day when you go with them.
