He was working at a realty business in San Pedro but tonight a 50-year-old U.S. fugitive is waiting to be sent back to the United States. Acting on a request from the U.S. Department of Justice, yesterday San Pedro police detained Texas resident George W. Berry. This morning he was accompanied by Sergeant Dennis Myles and flown into Belize City where he was held at the Queen Street Police Station. He has been here on a visitor's visa since March, and because he has not status, and expulsion order was issued for him today. He will be flown to Texas tomorrow where he is wanted to face an indictment for aggravated burglary and theft of service which is something like obtaining services by deception.

Even though he is a fugitive, he had gotten work in Belize and was employed at Captain Morgan's Vacation Beach Club and Belize Shore Realty in San Pedro.

Not any more, they've been busting crooks from the US left right and center for months now.

As to why in the past, English-speaking country with a good sized ex-pat population and relatively lenient immigration.

Phoney names; fake passports; bribery; US doesn't man the Belize entry points. But Belize does allow FBI/CIA/DEA agents into Belize and does assist them in grabbing wanted Americans.
