Marty - as always thanks for this live wire to keep old friends and family connected. I am a former Peace Corps high school teacher (San Pedro 90-93) and was on pins and needles through Keith last year.... I also taught in P.G. one summer and am obviously fretting about the situation on the mainland. Do you know if they evacuated inland from Belize City to the South? I caught some info on weather.com about Placencia, but nothing about Dangriga and/or P.G.... I guess flooding is going to be the biggest concern for that area... thoughts and prayers are with all. Also, as relief efforts get organized - any updates/feedback is appreciated. Take care, Pepper Chastain

I know folks in both placencia and dangraga that evacuated early today, i think that was a common occurance along the coast on the mainland.

at least from Belize City south.

I was just watching the 6 p.m. news on the weather channel. Prime Minister Musa was interviewed by the meteorologist. PM stated that evacuations had been going on all day from areas such as Hopkins, Seine Beight, Dangriga, Placencia and Punta Gorda. He commented that residents of PG are reluctant to leave as they have not ever experienced a major hurricane. He also commented that those that remember Hattie in 1961 are not wasting any time in evacuating.

Pepper -
As of 4:00 pm (DST), the village of Sarawee (Four Miles) outside Dangriga started to evacuate. They are using school busses to take the villagers up to the hills. Most of my family has gathered at Granny Vic's house (two story concrete structure). We are in touch via cell phone - who knows when the phones will go out. I am really nervous about the predicted 18' storm surge.

Another 1/2 hour and some more slight SouthWest movement...Plancencia is right in the middle of the target area this time around.

Many thanks to all who continue to update re: developments on the mainland. And to M-A Gaffney special thanks for your correspondence (you are all on my prayer list). If you have contact with Roman Arana and his family, please give him the same message. I know it will be a few days before we know the effect of the potential sea surge and rains, but there are MANY of us here in the States who want to help... please keep us informed! Take care, Pepper Chastain
