San Pedro Thieves Abandon Safe With $60,000 Inside

For criminals it is the next best thing to a bank heist, breaking into a credit union and making off with the safe. And that's what a team of San Pedro thieves did this morning but the rush was short lived.

Sometime between three and five this morning, a group of believed to consist of three men got in through the main door of the St. Francis Xavier Credit Union on Lagoon Street. Once inside they headed straight for the safe with $60,000 in cash inside. They got it out through the same door and loaded it into a waiting wheelbarrow.

A humble but workable plan, but what the thieves didn't take into consideration was the weight of safe. That slowed them down and at about 6:30 this morning a resident of the San Pablo Area saw three struggling with the safe in the street. That resident called police who came to the area and found the same submerged in the lagoon. They also saw three suspicious men waiting in a nearby boat. Police detained all three and reclaimed the safe. The credit union opened it and confirmed that nothing was missing, including the $60,000. Police have the men detained pending charges. All three are San Pedranos and they have been d detained numerous times for other crimes on the island.

Thanks for the post. The response of the police has increased considerably and with the forensic unit, they are convicting more and more of these guys and gals. Also, the local citizens are more prone to call in suspicious activity now that something is being done with the information.

I'm fairly confident that their fingerprints will be all over the safe and off to Hattiville they will go. We also have a full time Magistrate and justices is swift here - next day! Magistrate Jones has attended several Chamber of Commerce meetings and is keeping the community well informed.
GOOD JOB!

Hattieville Ramada!

Not a five star resort, maybe two on the Belizean scale.

I remember reading somewhere that Hattieville was rated as one of the worst prisons in the world. Anyone else hear about that article?

Went by the prison last summer, escaping the hurricane that never came. Anyone from the midwest: just picture the county fair 4-H stock barns. Steel roof and no sides. It'd deter me.

Online Happy
I spent two years there helping the inmates read and write. Conditions have considerably improved since Kolbe took over but far from a two star by any standards!!
