No more “Hey Mommy, give me a ride.” No more “Give me a dollar.” No more “I have this nice shell for only $15.”
He loved posing for my camera. We had some interesting conversations when no one else was around and he wasn’t in a hurry to get to Fido’s.
I wonder to whom he willed his walking stick?
Peace be with you. I will truly miss you.

Twelve years ago, our first trip to San Pedro, and our very first glimpse of Paisano as he casually leaned over the railing at Ramons and took a handful of french fries off the lunch plate of two over-groomed, over-dressed, high society matronly touristas. A sight that to this day is indelible, and makes us smile everytime we think of it.

San Pedro has lost an irreplaceable tiny corner of it's character.

Finally at peace my friend, God bless.

So sad. My last view of him, he was crossing the airstrip between Tropic and Maya trying to sell a paperback book. That was only a few weeks ago. I have to admit I thought he looked to be in poor health compared to six months ago on our previous trip. I'll miss him. Such a character.

Shortly after I moved to the island I was driving a golf cart by the Island Supermarket when Paisano hailed me down. He was going to the hardware store and so was I. Driving down front street he nudged me to pull over by the Alliance Bank. He does not get off, instead he started mumbling something to a young lady who was standing there. I asked him “Did you have me pull over so you could flirt with this girl?”. Then he said in the clearest voice I have ever heard from him.

“Yeah, nice rack”

I laughed all the way to the hardware store.

I saw him yesterday afternoon when he hailed me over and asked for a couple of bucks, while I pulled over he sat down by the side of the road and had his head in his hands. I asked him if he was okay and he said he just had a bit of fever and would be alright. I helped him up and he wished me a Merry Christmas and went on his way. I can't believe that we'll never see him again. This is a very sad day.

Love you Paisano. Miss you man. lots of good memories. He was quite the fellow. I have heard so many great stories of him in the old days. I know him from the last ten years. But he has blessed this community for many years.

We had some long conversations a couple weeks ago. i shall treasure his memory and his remarkable history.

One of my favorite stories was how the young men (who are now about 50 and running various enterprises around town) needed some rum in the middle of the night, they would pound on his door til he woke up and came to the door. he would give the (free) a couple bottles of rum and off the guys would go. no matter what hour i asked? no matter. he was rich in money once, and gave a lot of it away.

and i thank him again for the baby conch shell. it is now even more treasured.

peace paisano.

I first knew Paisano in 1978; but, my Paisano tales are too long to write here.

I last knew and spoke with Paisano every day from Dec 1 to 15, 2005 during which time my room at Lily's Hotel was just a few feet from where you see Paisano's feet in the photo below.

This photo of Paisano was taken on Lily's lower front porch, facing the sea just a few yards away. You may be surprised to learn that we were such good friends that he would sometimes bum a light instesd of a cigarette!!!

Lately, his "home" was where you see him in the Photo. I will miss Paisano very much - neither Lily's porch nor San Pedro will ever be the same again.

I would love to know Paisano's life story. I have only heard the local lore like most everyone else. When we were down in February, Paisano stumbled into the Sunbreeze Hotel courtyard where we were packing a bunch of parachutes. He started talking to me about "capewells" and "belly mount reserves" and "shrouds"....all old school skydiving gear terms not used since the early 80's. I was pretty amazed, yet somehow it didn't surprise me. I figured he may have jumped a long time ago in the military. A man with more history and stories than most...and finally at peace.

And I remember several years ago, sitting at the bar at Paradise, when Paolo Fiori ran it. Piasano rambles in with his ubiquitous conch shell. Paolo was in a good mood that day and rather than chase him off, she gave him $5 for the shell. When she closed that night, she took it home, placed it up on the balcony railing of her 3rd floor apartment ( where Aqua Marine is now) and went to bed. Next day, shell is gone. Late afternoon comes, and along with comes Piasano, selling.......yup, the same shell! Gotta love it.

Anyone think he's doing the same thing to St. Peter right now?

He never had more than one shell so he could give it to you with one had and take the money with the other with his walking stick tucked under his armpit. I hadn’t lived here long when he came up one day with a beautiful Flame Helmet shell and wanted $15.00 (Belize that is) I said, “I’ll give you $10. He took the ten, gave me the shell and as he walked away he said, “You owe me $5.

My wife and I have only spent 1 week on AC this last November. As we were walking into Fido’s one evening Paisano was walking out. He saw that my wife was wearing a knee brace and so showed us his knee brace and spent a minute sincerely commiserating with my wife about their shared injury and pain. At first I must admit that I took him for just another wino but he spoke so nice and with such true sympathy that my impression of him immediately changed and I felt a little ashamed for what I was originally thinking. “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Right? Now I feel kind of privileged and blessed to have met him.

You obviously did not know Piasano, he chose to live his life the way he did because he did what he wanted to and answered to no one. He did have a place to sleep and he chose to sleep wherever he wished. The majority of my friends are local San Pedrano's and I had a long conversation with an elder San Pedrano last night, a person who had known him since the day he arrived and he talked of him with fondness not disdain. The San Pedrano's were the ones at his funeral not the gringos (with a few exceptions) or the tourists. The shame is on you.

Thanks for that info Chris, I knew some of history but not as much as you've offered. I've only known Paisano for a few years so I never did get to see his old side. The Paisano I knew was always a kind person to me and always was always gracious whenever I gave him a ride, a smoke or a couple of bucks. He would often talk well of the older San Pedrano's as we drove around. I think you're right that as his time drew to a close he must have seen the error of his ways and in his own way was trying to make some amends. A saint he certainly wasn't but I'll bet he'll give Satan a good beating with that cane on his road to redemption.

One year when I had been working with TMM down in Placencia for a month or so, one of the first places I dropped by after coming home was BC's for a beer. I few minutes later I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned around to see Paisano, the first words out of his mouth were "welcome back". I was really touched by the fact that he even knew that I had been gone as I had never told him I was going off the island. It was one of the things that really made me feel that I was a part of the community. I will forever cherish the kind words he had for me on Friday when I last saw him.

Thanks to Short, I never new his real name.

To those that crapped on him when he was going down. Someone fed him the 'stuff' to keep him in his lower frame of mind.

Someone made fun of him when he showed himself publically.

Someone made him delight with a good meal and good conversation.

Someone made his life more bearable.

Someone must have seen good in Paisano like I did!
There's good and bad in most people. Find the good and see it even if it's not given back.

(my grandfather took pictures of him and his family). my grandfather said that he had everything, and then lost it all. he got involved into the "badder" things in life (drugs, alchol), it takes a true man to rise up and overcome with what he had went through many would have just given up on life at that point but he moved on, and became a friend to many on the island. We never understand how fast we can lose everything in one second, and how the world can change to be such a different place! he will be missed!

I feel so fortunate that I was able to meet Piasano earlier in December. The first night we arrived in SP we found ourselves at Fido's watching him play Air Guitar. The next day I met him on the beach and purchased a conch shell off him, and stole a quick photo with him, even though he bitched about it. haha.

I am happy to have known him, even if it was only for a few moments in time. Rest in peace dear Piasano..

This is terribly sad news.

Before my 1st San Pedro visit I'd read so much about him here (some of it not so good) that I was a little apprehensive to meet him.

Needless to say he was right there in the lobby of Holiday Hotel as we were first checking in. By the end of that night we were hanging out at Fido's together and we were all laughing and telling jokes, and he was explaining to my wife (in Arabic, no less) how he used to make various cheeses from scratch.

This is truly sad. May God bless you Paisano and bring you Peace.

In my many visits to Belize, I have always run into Paisano and given him a few bucks. The first time I did it, I told him I hoped he would get something good to eat. He came back an hour later and showed me the chicken and coca-cola he had bought for himself. Thought that was pretty cool.

Like just about everybody else, I bought a couple of conch shells from him and have them on my fireplace mantel. One shell, in particular, was not cleaned up enough. By the time I got it home, it smelled pretty bad and stunk up my carry on bag.

Another time, a friend and I painted his toe nails red while he was sleeping on the beach. He really liked that!

He will be missed. RIP lad.

I was so sad to read that Piasano had passed away. On our first trip to the Caye, before we knew who Piaasano was, he acosted us and demanded we take him somewhere in our golf cart. He tried out several languages on my husband and we followed his instructions and drove him wherever it was he was going and found him just delightful.
I took the picture below on our trip last September, in exchange for a couple of bucks and the cigarette he is holding. He was an essential part of the parade. I will miss seeing him on our future trips.

I've always said, "I wanna grow up to be just like Paisano." What a fantastic time he spent on this planet. Unfortunatly, those who knew him best have passed on also. I was compileing a book with the help of the late Trish Carter who knew him well. Sadly, when she passed on the accounts she and I had gathered went missing with her belongings. One of those accounts was an interview she had done with the late John Greif Sr., and varous conversations on tape I had made with Paisano.
I will always think of Habib like a father figure. He taught me a lot about living here as a new commer. I think about him everyday and will miss him a great deal. I'm so glad I saw him the night he passed. He said he was very sick and would not see me for awhile. I knew what he meant. Love ya Dad! Enjoy the transistion. TB

First of all. Barefoot, I did give you a cassette several years ago shortly after my mother's death. You mentioned a legal pad of which I have not found yet.

Its been several years now and I still have not gotten up to going through my mother's belongings. I looked for the tape because I knew it meant alot to you Barefoot. If I find anything else, when I go through her belongs, you know that I would give it to you.

Oh Paisano! My heart is indeed heavy. I just heard the news a few days ago and though I didn't know Paisano near as well as many of you, I do remember the first time I met him. I had already told my husband Darren about "the legend", so we wanted to make sure we found him during our trip. Sure enough we bumped into him. Darren went to take his picture and Paisano took his hat off, covered his face, turned and tooted his butt towards the camera. The look on Darren's face was classic and Paisano and I laughed so hard we were both doubled over. I remember seeing actual laughter and joy in his eyes as he laughed and at that moment my heart was light. I can't really explain the feeling, I just remember feeling really happy to be alive. We saw Paisano one other time during our trip, he was walking past a couple that looked at him with disdain and gave him a wide berth. Needless to say Paisano gave them a few "gestures" as he passed by them laugh . I remember Darren saying he wished he could sit with Paisano for a week and just listen to his stories. Sadly this will never be but we will always remember Paisano fondly even if only from the one time we met him. Rest in peace Paisano and don't give 'em too much hell wink .

I hate to admit, but I only just found out about Paisano's passing. I got a knot in the pit of my stomach. He was a GREAT guy and brought smiles out of people wherever he went. Yes, he will be missed. I chose my post icon as a smile instead of a frown or sadness for this reason. He did bring laughter and happiness to most all who met him. My memory? My dark haired, dark skinned husband with black beard passed him on the street. For whatever reason, he thought my husband was an Arab. He mumbled something in what I assume was arabic and my husband answered back in the only arabic phrase he knew, He was Totally unaware of what Paisano had said. Paisano got a HUGE grin on his face and rattled on in arabic for a full ten minutes. My husband just nodded. They were fast friends. We bought him lunch at BCs, he slept on our porch at night, and I'd step over him in the morning, leaving him breakfast and a cool drink by his side. We too have the token conch shell. He would wave us down and chase our cart for a ride. Always a gentleman. I even got a kiss on my birthday. He would also smash bottle caps and tell our kids they were precious rare coins.... What a character. God Bless you Paisano!!!! You certainly brought light into this world.
Debbie

Honestly you don't want to know.

Kristikins - So you wouldn't give the poor old guy a couple of bucks for photo - how do you think he lived, bought his cigarettes, etc? I would never begrudge the fellow a few dollars here and there.

I missed the funeral (out of town) and was bummed because I still have a brand new Scotland hat in my closet. I was waiting until he told me he was ready for the new one. Always had a back up for him.

I miss him all the time, I always expect him to pop out from around the corner. Used to see him every day.

Lacy,
Paisano told the story to Joe and I at the then Island Cuisine (outside table) by Paisano's house.

Paisano came down the street yelling "HI HOUSE", to his house, several times. Which made us laugh.

We waved to him, and he came over to the table and handed me a beautiful shell, and said for the pretty lady. No money.

Joe invited Paisano to sit with us, offered to buy him a beer and food, he said No, just a Coke.
He was very much at ease talking with Joe.

It was very quiet that afternoon, Paisano sat and told us about his life. As you know one had to listen carefully to understand what he was saying.

He told us several accounts of his life, that have not been posted on the board. Told nothing of his hardship on Ambergris, That day he was telling of his life before he left his homeland.
His father's death haunted him.

Lawerence of Arabia was one, he detailed how we would recognize him in the movie. At home we rented the movie and sure enough as he detailed the scenes, there the scenes were a few minutes into part two VHS video. As a young man/boy.

Whether that is Paisano or not, he sure had his mind together that day, and remembered the movie scenes. Rent it and you be the judge.

God rest his soul.
