Marty Offline
https://secure.nameservers.com/ambergriscaye.com/placencia/

This is an online donation form for donated funds to be sent to Placencia and the surrounding area if folks are interested.

We raised $40,000us that way after Keith. I will hold onto the charge data after input for a few days til I could determine the best way to get it to Placencia.

folks can also send $$ to Red cross noted c/o Belize Hurricane Fund.

$11,033 us raised as of 3 pm Belize Time Friday, 70 donations

This money will be sent to Belize untouched by any middlemans cut. We are going to send money down thru Frank Redmond. He is setting up a Barclays account just for these donations. He is out on the front lines today working with the Mennonites to bring relief to hard hit areas.

All funds raised by this list will be channelled through:

The Red Creek Mennonite Church,
San Ignacio,
Cayo

Pastor Frank Friesan
Tel 501 92 3722

Goods will be distributed throughout the Punta Gorda area through:

Caribbean Light and Truth
Punta Gorda

Tel 501 72 2344

The principle behind what we are doing is moving whatever is
purchased free. Labor for house construction will involve the new
owner with groups of Mennonites working as well for free.
Food and clothing will be distributed free.

I will have feedback from Punta Gorda by the weekend on the
suggested use of new funds, suggestions coming from the people of
PG. We are shipping another 3 tons of corn flour tomorrow, along
with other food items and clothes.40 ft container is going.

We currently have committments for the construction of 15 of the
$750 houses. We are waiting to see if this is the type of building
people want in general.

Thanks to all.

Marty: Thanks for following up - I am willing to donate money/supplies in whatever way works most quickly! Would this online pool go directly to NEMO or would you manage the distribution? Red Cross is always a good option - but I wonder about how quickly things get dispersed? Thanks for all you're doing... Pepper Chastain

I would get ahold of the mayor and town council of placencia as soon as possible and ask them the best way to get them the $$.

then i would read them the list of donations and card data. and it would be in the bank pronto with no overhead. we did this during keith also.

Its ready at:
https://secure.nameservers.com/ambergriscaye.com/placencia/

if folks want to donate

Flawless system - thanks for setting it up! Just wanted to check that these funds would be available for surrounding areas as well, e.g., Independence, Seine Bight, Mango Creek, etc. If other funds need to go to Red Cross or elsewhere for the greater area Stann Creek/Toledo districts... please let us know. Thank you so much Marty!

Such love and dedication. I really like knowing that my entire donation goes to the people affected. I hope everyone who reads this board will donate something and realize what a tight knit, loving community this is.

Americans were very generous with the WTC donations. I actually heard they had so many donations they were setting up a board to distribute the money. Sounds like a committee to me!

This is the 1st post I've read this morning I have my fingers crossed that the news is not too bad.

Hey Edd, tell Rick and Cheri hi, and maybe ask about the airline shipping, if its possible this time. Might be tougher to ship by plane with the increased security at the airports.

Marty,

My wife and I are still planning to be in AC on Thursday. Should we bring things with us for the relief effort or is money the best way to go? Will the Lions Club in SP be taking donations? Thanks for all that you do Marty, you are a kind and generous person.

I'm sure that the Lions Club in San Pedro will take donations. i don't know what to tell you to bring, anything but $$ is so hard to transport.

we tried after keith to get goods down, but what a struggle compared to $$....

enjoy your time in san pedro, i'm sure you will!

Marty: I passed on the link to your server to several ex-Peace Corps, and friends and family. Someone asked me about tax deductible status... I really hadn't thought about it. Did that come up with Keith?

In any case, the generosity of many is evident here and I anxiously await positive reports from the SPR crew heading down South tomorrow.

Thanks Marty for keeping the wire live for the past four days... Pepper

Marty,
Because you are not an established fundraiser, you will need to write a letter explaining what the money is specifically going to be used for, not just a blanket "hurricane relief" statement. You will need to list 3 references on the letter, such as town boards, hospitals, schools, etc.
We have just finished doing this for another project and that is what we have been told by the IRS.
Good job!!!!

I can do that easily. So it looks like these could be tax deductible. thanks a bunch for the information...

have added a tax deductible check box on the form for those who want a letter sent to them.

got a solid 4 hours sleep.

Embassy of Belize Hurricane Relief Efforts

As you may be aware, Belize was hit yesterday, October 8, 2001, by Hurricane Iris, a Category 4 Hurricane which caused extensive damage especially in the southern part of Belize.

In order to assist with the relief efforts, the Embassy has opened an account at RIGGS Bank to concentrate funds and donations for the post disaster period.

The Account details follow:

Name: Embassy of Belize - Hurricane Iris

Account No.: 17316546

ABA: 054 00 00 30 (for those who wish to send funds directly to the bank)

Cheques should be made out to "Embassy of Belize - Hurricane Iris", and either mailed to this mission or sent directly to RIGGS Bank N.A., Washington, DC, 20036-1147

Sincerely,

Trevor Vernon

WOW, Marty you're a machine already back in the saddle by 6am! Thanks for the update re: tax info. I'm getting cash from some people and just adding it to my card donations as I go. Just wanted to thank you for the tax deduction ltr. and ask if there is anything from an administrative standpoint that I can do to facilitate that when the time comes?? I will email you my US address so that you can delegate some of the admin. work at some time (I hope)!!!

A whole bunch of folk here in San Pedro are putting together a fundraising function at Fidos on Saturday. All booze is being donated, so all proceeds go to relief. Everyone is working for free. Participants in the function will also be donating cash, anonymously in envelopes. We hope to raise at least US4000.00 which will be turned into staple foods such as rice, beans, flour, corn etc. A couple of trucks from the British Army base at Ladyville will begin the process of transporting the goods to the South, probably on Monday. An emergency food kitchen will be in the area to take charge of the food.

The people of San Pedro have already donated bags and bags of clothing, food, loads of money, anything, really, that people can give to try to help. More is needed and more is being collected.

Extensive video being shown on TV here in San Pedro of the destruction suffered by our brothers and sisters in the South....very bad. Staggering that it all happened in one hour.

Have identified some people interested in driving supplies down - but it's loosely coming together. Will peruse posts on this and the Belizean Embassy supply list and update with possibilities. Thanks, Pepper

We've had calls & emails all day from friends here concerned about Mom. They've donated cash, and I've decided that any cash collected here, not needed to pay to ship items (c'mon Fed Ex, pull through for me, eh?) will go into this fund.

May I suggest the same thing to folks. If you've got people will to donate, collect & put it into this fund.

Cheers,

Kudos to every one of you for setting this up and keeping it going. My money is on its way. My wife and I were married at Robert's Grove in February and simply fell in love with the area and its people. Our hearts go out to you all and our prayers are with you. For now we will donate cash, but we plan to get back down in the new year to help re-generate the local economy and give a helping hand in any way possible. For now, may God bless you.
