I am fed up with reading posts from people that used to come here years ago and still profess to be experts on everything to do with A.C..
Let me let these people know that the island has changed-businesses have been sold from Hotels to Street Side Stalls-how can anyone be an expert without visiting san pedro at least every 18 months-the favourite answer is by reading the Message Board -my answer is"Get a Life"-be an expert through your own recent experiences-Most new or prospective visitors do not want to know what the island was like 2 to 6 years ago.

Is George's kitchen open? fill me in Pedro1.

And what about those Islanders who get it wrong, P1, how ya feel about them?

I've queried 5 times to find out if George's is open....I was there in late November and he wasn't open yet.......Pedro1......it isn't far from your place....help me out!

pedro why 18 months ,I think once a year is fair , to be called a expert ..????and as far as I see it about 10 or more food places/bars or new restaurants open a year,and at year end there are maybe three left still in business .. favorite waiters and bartenders,cooks happy vistors have met only one time , and loved .have moved twice or three times in that year to other places ..yes you have to come once a year to really know whats still hot or not.and still open with the same staff. it is like a game who is working were now?????..but this is a great plce to have fun.. And living the dream here is easy ..

My husband and i have been coming to San Pedro every year since 1993. Everything changes from year to year and every time we come out there is so much we don't remember form the year before. I don't know if it is the beer??? the rum??? or our brains

Glad to hear that George's Kitchen is open again. They were closed in July when we were there. We miss them greatly, as it is a great place to gather with other regular SP visitors that we see every year. They have great breakfasts and we love to talk with Maria & George. They are hard working people.

Pedro, young lad: I agree with the Captain. In past vacations to San Pedro, sometimes 6 months apart, there are many changes. My own comment: even if one does not visit the island for a couple years and then returns, this does not mean that they cannot have their say, and if incorrect, someone who has been there or lives there will set it straight.

Since you live there and are in the know, you have the advantage and can give repeat visitors and first time visitors up to date information, if you wish to do so. Otherwise, for those of us who have been there repeatedly, but sometimes don't return for a couple of years(after all, there are thousands of other places to go and I want to see some of them), be gentle.

As for this traveler, Belize is one of my favorite places in the world, but this year, I am off to other locales. Can't wait to hear and see of the changes on AC the next time I return!

Let people contribute without criticizing them. folks don't have to know the latest color paint job on a certain hotel to know the essence of San Pedro.

I think they are not refering just to the color of paint on a hotel, but when some boarders know everything but have not been here since new hotels, restrauants, and operations have opened. They should mention how long ago they were here and that their advice is based on that.

So what is the crux of this whole thread??? Two points perhaps...

One, some people need to perhaps (as so eloquently phrased above) "get a life" ...and not be so caught up in bickering and whining about whose opinion on Ambergris is more valid than another...

and two, to all the readers of this board (or for that matter, any board, or any website... or any book, newspaper article, magazine or written word) plain and simple, know your source. There's a lot of "power" and "authority" attributed to the written word... before criticizing, agreeing, embracing, repeating or defending anything you read, know the source of what you read (the mess/uproar surrounding James Frey this past week is a good example of this...)

So what is valuable about all these posts on this board (in my humble opinion) should not be measured by a yardstick of "who lives here" or "who visits Ambergris the most"... That's somewhat irrelevent, as all the posts here are simply ONE person's opinion.

Take myself... I actually DO live here... and have for years... I also CANNOT tell you if George's is open... or for that matter, when Tropic got their new plane(s), what progress is on the bridge, what the price of pasta is at Super Buy, how many people were at Fido's last night or a host of other "current" things... I CAN tell you what the condition of the road is from Sundiver to Mata Chica, what's new on our menu here this week, what the weather has been like up north the last few days, when the marker in front of Sundiver was replaced, what's gone on in our kitchen the last 18 hours, how to backwash an RO system that was ripped out by Wilma, how many new arrivals were brought up this way on today's 3:00 Island Ferry, and a host of other things... So does living here make me an authority on anything... nope. Anything I say is just based on my experience, opinion and perspective.

Thank you Marty. We all love San Pedro and Belize or we wouldn't be on this message board. We just want to share our own experiences of your lovely town and it's people to the new comers. Some of us are even property owners in SP. Coming up on our eleventh trip for three weeks this time. I can hardly wait.

I'm not terribly interested in the opinion of ex-pats or residents when it comes to hotel, tour guide, restaurant recommendations.

I'd much rather hear from someone who used the service being inquired about the way I intend to use it, as a tourist, not as a buddy or business associate.

Face it, if you live in SP, you're much more likely to have a potential conflict of interest or personal agenda in touting (or slamming) a local business then a once a year visitor.

Its the difference between someone "living the dream" or "chasing the Green".

As for Obtuse, I don't want to say it's because he's from NY, but I don't think I've EVER had a gentle discussion with anyone who has come from there. Very dogmatic in their opinions, and theirs is the only one that matters. Recently had a salesman from NY call me a Bit*h over the phone because I wouldn't order a battery with a camera I had ordered...so he cancelled my whole order. Go figure..Anyhow, the gentle ways of the island may touch Obtuse with enough force that he mellows. Until then, I'll take him with a grain of salt...and a lime...and some tequila..helps soften his personality in the mean time.

Jeff never had any monetary interest in Bicho. He liked fishing with him, knew he had a large family and wanted to help him. So he did help him get set up with his fishing business and fished with him every chance he got. Some friendships don't last forever and when they parted ways Capt. Jeff NEVER came on this board and said anything negative about Bicho. If he chooses to fish with a variety of other guides now, what is it to you?
