"Name the North" contest
|
|
As you all know I held a name the bridge contest. Amanda Syme was the winner with "soon come bridge". I was stacking the votes in favor of "80lb gringo bitch bridge" myself, however Judge Jesse appointed the winner. Amanda was the recipient of a cold case of Belikin in February delivered to her doorstep. But the reapers were the real winners as Amanda and her family hosted us poolside for dinner! So here is the new contest. Name the North...the new city that will spring up across the bridge. A case of cold Belikin to be delivered in May, or whenever the winner is in San Pedro, it can be redeemed at Pedro's Inn. Here are the rules...you must have visited or are going to visit SP before Dec. 31,2006 to participate!(Happy P1?) And you can submit up to three names only. And I'm naming Amanda and BelikinBill the judges, just because I like their senses of humor and it's my contest, THAT'S why! Begin!

Ahhhh, nostalgia. Everything north of the cut used to be just "north of the cut". Now,everything is "north of the bridge."
How about keeping the hand ferry as a nostalgic experience (meaning you could charge $20 round trip)? All those future tourists who will not have the chance to experience it, or take pictures of it.
I wonder when we will see twist-tops on Belikin?
Heavy sigh.

I can't enter as I won't be in San Pedro before Dec. 2006, since I was just there. But here are some suggestions.
1. Paradise Cut 2. North Cut Caye 3. Ambergris North 4. Temptation Isle 5. A Cut Above 6. Paradise Cut
Or for fun you could go with
1. San Pedro Exile 2. Over the Bridge 3. Bumpy Road North 4. No Cabs Allowed

glass1 / I don't know you, but what I gather from your posts I don't think you would suggest to name a town north of the cut "Satin begins here" Satin 1: smooth lustrous appearance or sleekness to touch 2: a fabric (as of silk) My guess is you meant to say Satan. (As in the adversary of God and lord of evil) Maybe I'm wrong - I don't think so.

I know you are just having fun but it is already named “North Ambergris Caye.” Not nearly as imaginative as you folks but heck, it works for us (as in North Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch) And of course there are people who argue over just what is “North”

I thought reaper was asking for ideas to name a future city or town up North, not the whole area North of the Cut. Of course North Ambergris Caye is already established. Just a fun topic to keep the gray matter stimulated. Don't use it, you'll lose it! And I don't mean just the brain...

From the Webster's Dictionary
Ambergris: a grayish, waxy substance from the intestines of sperm whales, often found floating in tropical seas: used in some perfumes.
How about?
1. Gray isle 2. Fragrance of Sex 3. O'd' whale
I give up

Amanda,
I tought the contest was about naming the North part of Ambergris Caye. However, it seem like you all don't take into consideration the history that area holds. I believe you all don't care about the opinions of local people anyways. Maybe I should find another site to express my opinions.

Ok Amanda and Bill... It's time to name the winner! And since it's my contest and we are playing by "Official Rules of Belize" page 29, rule 135, section 3, line 5150...I'm changing the rules! The winner will have his/her case of beer turned into a $50usd to the "Fruit Lady Fund" in their honor. All contestants have until noon Friday to submit their entry. Amanda, Bill...good luck!

Sounds Fixed to me. Watch the Great North Grow, Next, more New Bars, Resorts, Power, Trails North, and a Ferry to Mexico. Soon, Corona will be available, could be on black market, but who cares, as long as it's cold.

GOOD CHOICE - especially since the lagoon will probably continued to be dredged and filled. Then we can start working on Nomora Reef.

Malibu, Awesome Job!! When you speak of reefa nomora, tounge in cheek, but do you think it is inevitable? as is LagunaNoMora? Is the no more lagoon there now, and are you saying the reef will be no mora also? Just scared, curious??What is happening with the lagoon up north? I thought Manatees once cruised those waters?

Coral Species Put on 'Threatened' List
By ADRIAN SAINZ, Associated Press Writer
MIAMI - Two coral species in Florida and the Caribbean now have a spot on the federal threatened list because of dangers posed by human activity, hurricanes and higher water temperatures.
The elkhorn and staghorn coral species have suffered a 97 percent decline in areas off the Florida Keys and in the Caribbean since 1985 and must be protected, National Marine Fisheries Service biologist Stephania Bolden said Friday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which oversees the fisheries service, made the announcement Thursday in Washington, making the species the first coral to earn a threatened distinction. The move was praised by scientists and environmentalists.
The federal government will hold forums in Florida and the Caribbean to discuss suggestions for rules to protect the coral under the Endangered Species Act, Bolden said.
A species is considered threatened if it's likely to become an endangered species. The rules involving threatened species are not as strict as those involving endangered species, which face extinction.
Both coral species have protruding branches that look like antlers. They are part of reefs that are home to fish, crustaceans and other invertebrates. Reefs also serve as barriers from storm waves.
Several factors have harmed the coral in the past 20 years. Disease, temperature-induced bleaching, hurricanes, more nutrients in the water, damage from anchors or boat groundings and increased sediments and contaminants from land-based sources have hurt the coral species.
Off the U.S. Virgin Islands, as much as 40 percent of coral died in some reefs last year, and the coral that survived probably isn't healthy enough to survive another hot summer, U.S. Geological Survey biologist Caroline Rogers told The Associated Press last month. Some 100-year-old colonies are reported to have died.
Coral bleaching is attributed to higher-than-normal water temperatures and causes the coral to lose color and its food source. Hurricanes have always been present, though Bolden points out that the most recent die-off also corresponds with a cycle of increased storm activity.
Tyler Smith, a coral researcher at the University of the Virgin Islands, welcomed the ruling because it will "give a respect for the species." Smith and other scientists were mapping reefs around the islands and Puerto Rico to asses the extent of the massive coral die-off last year.
The California-based Center for Biological Diversity had filed a petition to raise the coral from a "species of special concern."
"If these losses are not arrested and reversed, Florida's corals could go extinct within the foreseeable future, resulting not only in the loss of these irreplaceable forms of life, but also billions of dollars in tourist, recreational, medicinal, and subsistence income," the group said in praising the government's decision.
