Diane Campbell / Thank you for all the information. Your knowledge of AC and the mainland is ceaseless.
You are most definitely correct, golf carts are not toys. I must admit, however, I allowed my son to drive our rented golf cart. I drove way south past the electricity poles. There were no other carts or houses. Yes, I moved over and let him drive. We stopped and I even got out and took a picture of him behind the wheel for our photo album. He still talks about that fun experience. No lives were in danger - but it was illegal.

It's all about using good judgement. To allow an underage driver to go bombing through town or a residential neighborhood is creating a potentially dangerous situation. My son, on the other hand, has been racing go-karts for years and has a real respect for the power of a vehicle. To let him drive slowly, supervised, in an unpopulated area was not wreckless.

Isn't it the presumption that the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident with a pedestrian is responsible for the medical costs of the pedestrian, regardless of blame? It certainly is so in Britain, with the driver's insurance normally picking up the bill. Any form of motor vehicle is potentially a lethal weapon and there is a strong onus of care on the driver. Once when driving in England I hit a pedestrian who ran out in front of me. I was totally exonerated from blame - in fact the pedestrian was prosecuted - but I still had to pay her medical costs.

Marty / Glad to see you could use the sweet picture of Julia and her fruit stand in the Ambergris Today article. I sure hope she pulls through the third surgery and begins the recovery process soon.
Thanks for all you do on this board and the island. It wouldn't be the same without you!

Pedro2 - that is not the way the law would work in California - which just underscores my point that counsel with knowledge of local law is necessary.

On our first visit, we were near Belize Yacht Club, just south of Jade Graden, waiting for them to open for dinner. A group of 5-6 young kids (yeah, likely Americans) came around the corner, and the kid who was driving had no idea how to take a corner. Accelerated going into the turn! We had to scramble to get out of the way. The kids may have been 16, barely, but had no business driving like that. They hit the right side of the road, veered to the left, then finally came back to the right lane. We got out of the way. Golf carts are not toys, and no one who does not know how to drive should be operating them. Actually, with the road conditions around town, it's hard enough for those of us who have been driving (cars!) for 30+ years! Please, make sure that the drivers are responsible and careful!

Marty / Do you know if Julia Mangear's (fruit lady) family has established a bank account to receive contributions to offset her medical expenses? Please let us know as soon as an account is set up.
Much Thanks,
Pam
