You can find more photos of Placencia on the ground taken on Oct 11,
2001 now at http://www.belizenet.com/iris2/ .

Most images were taken with film and won't be available for a few days.
These are snaps we took with a small digital camera so we could get
something up quick for you.

These will probably be the last images as we are busy with other relief
efforts. The only thing I would recommend is that if at all possible,
donated money be sent to Belize for use and not spent on sending more
people down. There are many heroes during this crisis and there will be
plenty of time for kudos after we take care of the villages and get them
back on their feet.

The photos were taken on Oct 11th, 2001 during a recon and supply trip to the Placencia Peninsula - here is a VERY brief summary of what we found:

Maya Beach to Seine Bight - Damage was not nearly as sever as the end of the peninsula. Some of the major resorts feel they will be back in business by mid November, that might be pushing it a little, but it is also possible.

BTL was in the area setting up cell stations and the peninsula should have Internet and phone by next week.

Power is still an issue. We could not determine when it might be restored.

Seine Bight was hit hard, but not as bad as the end of the peninsula. Work crews are well organized, clean up is well underway, and the villagers appear energized and active. Kitchens, command posts and supply distribution have been established and are working.

The major damage was to older wooded buildings.

Placencia was hit hardest on the peninsula. 90% - 95% buildings damaged is a fair estimate. Buildings were blown away, knocked off stilts and even moved several yards into neighbouring properties. Trees and power lines have been knocked down. Left standing are larger wooden and concrete buildings and even a few coconut trees. The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) along with the village councils are hard at work organizing shelter, food and medical so that people can get on with the clean up and re-building efforts. The volunteers and relief supplies are also being coordinated.

Ditto, Gayle.
Tony, keep sending photos as long as you can.
Especially, when it occurs, of the rebuilding.
Thanks for the pics again!

For contrast to the panorama of the damage to Placencia posted above, visit http://belizescuba.com/plac02.html (turn on your speakers!) (or the full screen jpg version at http://belizescuba.com/plac02hq.jpg ) to see a panorama of exactly the same location before the hurricane.

Hey Joe - Lori from the Space Minkey here - thanks for the before... which is definitely different than the after. I liked it better when my house was on stilts.

Hi Lori- I'm sorry to hear your house was lost. You're in our prayers.

Did you listen to the narration on the pano? Brian describes a big hurricane that happened there when he was about 10 years old. Kind of eerie to hear..... Sounds too much like recent events.

Hi Lori:

Your house really looks quite stunning at gound level..like those big rambling ranch houses in the US....but hope you can get it jacked back up before the next storm....and so relieved to know Brian's is in such good shape...time to celebrate what is left, not lament what was lost, but help people replace....should be pointed out that Do-Do did a great job on Lori's house, and his other buildings in the village, as they held up so well in the face of that monster torrent....WOOD constuction...saw a post where someone was bragging about another builder on the peninsula and his expertize now being proven....all I can say is...how much talent does it really take to build a massive concrete thing like Luba Hati that stands up in a storm...really boils down to how the roof is attached in that case...... but here we have WOOD construction not even losing a roof sheet!!!! where others are rubble...amazing, not too mention none of those other massive projects that survived undamaged were not at "ground zero" so how can you compare. I hear (no pictures yet) my wooden house stood up equally as well, built by Steve Christensen/PBS, but it is 10 miles north and didn't get hit by that huge wave...next door to another concrete monstrosity that is being bragged about....hurricane clips is what was tested here....got to get a container load of those shipped down for the rebuild.
