when we arrive in sp we would like to purchase a couple of bikes for our use while there and then sell them when we leave. does anyone have any suggestions as to where we can purchase the bikes and get a fair deal in the process?

I got a good price from Amal Hardware south of town. Bring some motorcycle-quality cable locks with you - the ones available locally are rubbish. Bicycle theft is the national sport.

or donate them to one of the schools - there must be some worthy kids who might really appreciate it.

Don't know how long you'll be in SP.

I've made the calculation a couple of times...usually spent over a month there. Easier to just rent long term. Rental bikes come with a basket and perhaps a child seat....this makes it easier to haul stuff...if you don't have a kid. Having a basket installed should be a hassle on a newly purchased bike. Also rental company provided maintenance weekly or bi-weekly....usually more oil on the chain.

Another option is to buy a used bike from the rental store. They're constantly changing their rental fleet.

If I remember correctly..a rental is BZE 50 per week and a new bike is BZE 250.

You can check classifieds in san pedro sun and ambergris today I saw 2 different ads lately this week on bikes for sale.

We just scored one that way from our neighbour (we will get a seccond one eventually when we see a deal)

As to Rental Calvio's bike rental on middle street by Mickeys restaurant and barefoot books is nice that is who we see for a seccond bike option now if we are both riding.

thanks for all your responses. in 05 we purchased two bikes from the hardware store just north of the power plant and sold them w/o much trouble. we did notice some people eyeing up our nice shiny bikes. it never occurred to us to check with the rental people to see if they had any for sale. for us buying and reselling was a better deal then long term renting.
also, donating the bikes to a local school is a thoughtful idea!
