Governor of Campeche donates to Hurricane Iris Relief Effort

01 December, 2001 - Belmopan
The Governor of the southern Mexican state of Campeche Antonio Gonzalez
Curi this morning handed over a large donation of building materials and
supplies for victims of Hurricane Iris.

The Governor and his delegation, which included his wife Elvia Maria
Perez de Gonzalez was greeted at the Memorial Park in Belize City by
Prime Minister Said Musa, Area Representatives Marcial Mes and Michael
Espat and other government officials.

The Campeche donation includes 1,830 sacks of cement; 6 thousand sheets
of zinc roofing material and household items, all with a monetary value
of approximately $160,000.

Governor Gonzalez in making the presentation said that as soon as he
heard of the devastation caused by Hurricane Iris in the Stann Creek and
Toledo districts, he contemplated how best to lend a helping hand.

The result he said, was today's four truckloads of supplies, a donation
which the Campeche Governor described as "modest but sincere." He said
the donation is a reflection of the continued spirit of brotherhood and
solidarity that Mexico shares with its neighbors.

Chairman of the Toledo District Emergency Management Organization and
Minister of Rural Development Marcial Mes thanked Governor Gonzalez Curi
for the donation on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Iris and the
Government of Belize.

"I am very happy to accept the gift from the people and Governor of
Campeche," said Minister Mes, "take a very big 'thank you' from the
people to Toledo district who I know very well be happy to receive these
items, especially the household items that will replace many of those
that the people lost."

Following the brief handing over ceremonies, the convoy of trucks
carrying the donated materials left Belize City enroute to the affected
areas to deliver the materials.

Other officials at this morning's handing over ceremonies included
representatives of the Mexican Embassy in Belize and the National
Emergency Management Organization.
