Peter Singfield of Xaibe Village is making virgin coconut oil, if anyone want to buy some. We are working on a website for it, but if you can't wait, just email him at snkm@btl.net. I got a few liters, divided them up and gave them to friends. Great for cooking, for curing skin (incredible how it fixes pimples or skin trauma such as post tattoo), for making salad dressings that are incredible. Great oil, super healthy and anti-rancid, lasts forever.

i like just eating a lil too, great for vitamins. tastes like the essence of coconut. We're putting together lots of material on uses, but I recommend you just get some now and not mess around.

Price is $25 US per liter delivery included -- but minimum order of 4 liters. Thats from Peter, I have some here, if you want a lil tester first, let me know and we can work something out...

here's information on ordering:
http://TurneffeCoconut.com

a temp page we just whipped up real quick...

I would buy this stuff but the payment process is too onerous. I live in a little mountain town and shlepping to banks, etc. is too much trouble, takes hours. Western Union takes as much as 20% of the "price" of anything, way too high. The smaller your order, the higher the fee for Western Union.
Also I would not send a cashier's check through the mail to Belize. There have been many instances of theft from the Belizean mail system (I sent a $700 check once and by the time it hit my bank it was a $7000 check!!!) And others have told me of similar experiences. Recourse when cashiers checks go astray is very difficult.
I do all my shopping online or by catalogue. The key is ease of use. You can't make the order and payment process dependent on snail mail and intermediaries that the buyer has to visit.
Peter needs to come up with a way to accept online payment, either via credit card or through some kind of payment service that can be used internationally. Having a merchant account may be too costly for a small businessman, but he should check out PayPal and c2it (www.paypal.com and www.c2it.com ) They do charge fees (c2it to Belize takes about a 7-8% hit due to profit on foreign exchange but that's cheaper than Western Union. I am not sure what the international exchange profit is on international PayPal but its worth looking into.)

yeah, its not the easiest payment, but sometimes good stuff involves a lil more, or you just miss out.

i am going to make up several dozen of these freebies, so git ahold of me of you all you stateside regulars, jane, hope, tammy, lan, karen, ya'll know yer good selves. you got one comin.

Thanks Marty, but I went ahead and ordered it, using Western Union's online service. The fee is $15.
This is a lot cheaper than what you pay to do it by phone: They wanted $25 (a 25% fee!!) to do it by phone! What a ripoff!
I also had to demand a supervisor because they refused at first to accept my online transaction unless I called and gave a customer service operator my social security number, past addresses, etc. I had to call and explain to the idiot customer service rep that this is a violation of the FCPA and violates their merchant agreement with VISA. Then I had to explain this to the idiot's supervisor. So it was a hassle, but I guess the coconut oil is worth it! (But its not worth a 7 hour drive to my credit union for a cashier's check!)

Peter should investigate wwwc2it.com and www.paypal.com; it will get him more business. People are in a hurry these days and want to be able to pay easily online.

I am going to give a couple of bottles away too.

We have a lot of coconut trees on our land in Panama, maybe my husband can learn how to make this stuff when we get there. Actually, what I want is to know how to mix coconut with chocolate!

There is a book out about virgin coconut oil, its supposed to be very good for you but its hard to get. I bet it will be good for my hair too, what with all the peroxide it gets!!!

its SUPER good for your hair...
we have a lil info on that, getting more...

Coconut oil can be used for a dry scalp, and as a hair conditioner as and when required. It can be used as follows:- Warm the Coconut oil in the jar, in a bowl of hot water, until it is in a liquid form. After checking that the temperature is not too high, apply some liquid Coconut oil to the scalp and rub in well. Place a shower cap (or plastic bag, held in position with a towel) over the hair, so that the scalp is kept warm. After approximately 15 minutes, apply plenty of shampoo before wetting the hair. Work shampoo well into scalp and hair to break down the oil. Rinse shampoo and oil away.
////////////

also more info on coconut oil and its uses at:
http://AmbergrisCaye.com/medicine6.html

that was written a couple years ago....
Susan, i'll have Peter read your note about the online pay services, we discussed it, but we thought you have to have a USA bank. Then we'd have to take in the $$ in the USA, send it to Belize, and there are tax implications there we'd rather not deal with...

but I know Wendy has PayPal, and her bank is on Caye Caulker, so maybe.... thanks for the impetus....

from Peter:
==========
So far -- my personal favorite way to use this oil (besides frying eggs for
breakfast) is spreading it on bread with honey.

I'm curious how sauted mushrooms would work with this.

I also make a lot of "Sherbet" with it. Powdered milk -- Roma's cocoa --
couple plantain for some bulk and food value (could use bananas) and lot's
of coconut oil -- all well blended with water -- then in the freezer.

No sweetening added -- and it still tastes sweet.

This coconut oil is supposed to adjust your thyroid activity to perfection.
That is if your to "large" -- you reduce -- if your to "small" you gain
weight (Handy for HIV)

It also is almost instant energy -- like high metabolism carbohydrates --
sugar.

So makes a good energizer -- i find -- when combined with chocolate in the
manner described above.

Actually -- I could live on the above Sherbet --

Will try to simplify this recipe and see if I can post it on the board for anyone who wants to give it a try. I make it for sale a Xmas, with the proceeds going to the local food pantry. We sell about 3,000 bars, so the recipe I use is much larger than you would want. One of the best sellers has been one that has cedar and balsam for a doggie shampoo, I call it "Bowser Bath". Lots of pampered poochies out there. If anyone is feeling ambitious it would make a great fund raiser for Saga.

If you can make this outside,do. The initial stages are highly causic.Have some vinegar handy in case you get any on your skin.
Mix one can of lye (red devil lye, available in grocery, DON"T use Draino.) Place in a heat proof container like pyrex. and add 2 3/4 pts. water. Stir until dissolved. Meanwhile melt 5 1/2 lb. lard or shortening (not veg. oil). Let both mixtures cool to 95 degrees, they should be within several degrees of each other. Add 1 cup. cocnut oil. Now mix the two in a large enamel kettle.(Add the water mix slowly) Add 3/4 cup borax and stir constantly. The mixture will began to thicken to a honey consistency.(Called "tracing".) Now you can add essential oils, such as lavender, rosemary etc. Also experiment with oatmeal and cornmeal. Now it is ready to pour. You can use old shoe boxes, milkcarton etc. lined with waxed paper or and old tee shirt. Cover with a blanket and let stand overnight. Cut in when it is set but not hard. The soap must sit for about 3wks before it can be used. This is because it is undergoing a process called saponification which change the lye content. (All soap is made from lye). It is a very mild soap. If you avoid using perfumes for scent, even better as it is great for people who are allergic to artificial scents. Coloring can also be added before going in the molds.

Coconut Oil is the Healthiest Oil on Earth!

"Coconut oil is the healthiest oil on earth"says Dr. Bruce Fife, a naturopathic doctor and the author of the book The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil. Modern research seems to back up this bold statement. Once wrongly accused of increasing cholesterol levels, coconut oil is now actually being used by doctors in the treatment of a variety of disorders. Clinical studies have shown that coconut oil has anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, and is now even being used in treating AIDS patients. Studies conducted in the Philippines last year showed that coconut oil does indeed reduce the viral load in AIDS patients.

Lauric Acid a Key Component to Health
Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid which is abundant in coconut oil, and considered to be responsible for many of its health benefits. Coconut oil is about 50% lauric acid. The only other abundant source found in nature is in human breast milk. Dr. Jon J. Kabara, PhD and Professor Emeritus of Michigan State University says, “Never before in the history of man is it so important to emphasize the value of Lauric Oils. The medium-chain fats in coconut oil are similar to fats in mother's milk and have similar nutriceutical effects." See: HEALTH OILS FROM THE TREE OF LIFE (NUTRITIONAL AND HEALTH ASPECTS OF COCONUT OIL) at http://www.apcc.org.sg/John.PDF

Dr. Mary Enig, a Ph.D. nutritionist/biochemist and one of the world’s leading authorities on fats and oils, goes on to say, “Approximately 50% of the fatty acids in coconut fat are lauric acid. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid, which has the additional beneficial function of being formed into monolaurin in the human or animal body. Monolaurin is the antiviral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal monoglyceride used by the human or animal to destroy lipid coated viruses such as HIV, herpes, cytomegalovirus, influenza, various pathogenic bacteria including listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Some studies have also shown some antimicrobial effects of the free lauric acid." See Coconut: In Support of Good Health in the 21st Century at http://www.apcc.org.sg/special.htm

The Politics of Tropical Oils
So why has coconut oil gotten such a bad rap in the recent past? After all, much of the research supporting coconut oil as a healthy fat has been around for some time. The answer is politics and economics. Coconut oil was heavily used in the US at one time, being used for baking, pastries, frying, and theater popcorn. Starting in the 1980s, according to Bruce Fife in his book "The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil," some very powerful groups in the US, including the American Soybean Association (ASA), the Corn Products Company (CPC International) and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), began to categorically condemn all saturated oils. Faulty science was used to convince the public that ALL saturated fats were unhealthy, when in fact saturated fats rich in the medium chain fatty acids, like lauric acid, are very healthy. These organizations were aided by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many of whose key personnel are recruited from and return to the vegetable oil industry, according to Fife. The result was that most people switched to vegetable oils, and the main source of lauric acid from tropical oils in the American diet was lost. The countries that these tropical oils came from, mainly the Philippines and Malaysia, were too poor to counter these untrue claims with advertising investments for the truth. It is only recently that the health benefits of these tropical oils are starting to become rediscovered. Much of the research can be found on the www.coconut-info.com website.

Here ya go C

FRAGRANT CRISPY DUCK

This is a big-deal dish. But the numerous steps, all easy, transform the duck into a wonder of subtle spiciness. We had this dish in Xi'an, where five-spice powder in the rub and the dipping salt were lovely touches.
Active time: 1 1/4 hr Start to finish: 1 1/2 days

1 (4 1/2- to 5 1/2-lb) fresh Pekin duck (sometimes called Long Island duck)
6 tablespoons toasted Sichuan-peppercorn salt
1 tablespoon five-spice powder
2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine or dry Sherry
6 (1/8-inch-thick) slices fresh ginger
4 scallions, cut into 2-inch pieces
About 12 cups corn, peanut, or canola oil
2 tablespoons dark (black or mushroom) soy sauce
1/3 cup all-purpose flour

Special equipment: a 10-inch glass pie plate or shallow heatproof bowl; a 16- to 18-inch wok with a lid and a 9 1/2- to 10-inch round metal rack, or a 14-inch wok and same rack plus a large pot (at least 12 inches wide and 5 inches high); long oven mitts; a bulb baster; an electric fan; 2 large Chinese mesh spoons or large slotted spoons

Prepare duck: Cut off wing tips with poultry shears or a sharp knife. Remove and discard excess fat from body cavity and neck, then rinse inside and out. Pat dry inside and out and press on breastbone to break it and flatten duck.

Marinate duck: Heat peppercorn salt and five-spice powder in a dry skillet over moderate heat, stirring, until hot. Measure out 3 tablespoons and rub 1 tablespoon in body cavity and 2 tablespoons over outside of duck, including under wings and legs. Reserve remaining spiced salt for serving with duck.

Put duck in a bowl and marinate, covered and chilled, 8 to 24 hours.

Steam duck: Drain any liquid from cavity and put duck in glass pie plate. Rub rice wine over duck. Smash ginger and scallions with flat side of a large heavy knife, then put one third in duck cavity and scatter remainder over duck.

Fill wok with enough water for rack to sit 1/2 inch above water and bring to a rolling boil. Wearing oven mitts, put pie plate with duck on rack over boiling water and cover wok with lid.

Reduce heat to moderate and steam duck 2 hours, checking every half hour to siphon off fat and juices from around duck and in cavity with bulb baster and replenishing boiling water as necessary.

Wearing oven mitts, remove pie plate from steamer. Discard ginger and scallions. Drain duck and cool in pie plate 15 minutes.

Air-dry duck: Slide duck onto a rack set over a baking sheet (to catch juices) and pat dry with paper towels. Position duck in front of a fan and air-dry 2 hours, making sure air blows directly onto duck.

Fry duck: Heat 2‚ inches oil in large wok or large pot until a deep-fat thermometer registers 375°F. Meanwhile, brush outside of duck with soy sauce, then dust with flour, gently knocking off excess.

Dip mesh spoons in hot oil (to keep duck from sticking) before using them to gently lower duck into hot oil. Fry duck, spooning hot oil over top, 2 minutes. Carefully turn duck over and fry 1 minute more. With extreme care, remove duck from oil with mesh spoons, draining cavity, and transfer to paper towels to drain.

3Heat oil to 400°F and fry duck a second time, in same manner, until dark brown and crisp, 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side. Again with extreme care, remove duck from oil with mesh spoons, draining cavity, and transfer to paper towels to drain briefly.

Presentation: Serve duck with small dishes of reserved spiced salt for dipping.

Makes 4 servings

Marty,
The oil arrived today! I sat in my truck, ripped open the mailer, opened the container and got myself a finger full, LOL WOW! Tastes awesome! Now how can I use something that tastes as good as this stuff does on the body? I will, tho its gonna be hard to give up! I'll have to find someone whos willing to give it a shot. I had to sell my biz last week. Long sad story that I wont go into here. So I need a body to massage. Soon as I find someone worthy of the experiment I'll let you know how it goes. It feels like it will glidepretty good once warmed. Just an idea...(I am a legit massage therapist after all) to use for adult sensual massage Im pretty darn sure this stuff would beat any Kama Sutra or sensual massage product on the market (and its edible too, aint that great!). Those of you who got a sample and have a mate you ought to give it a whirl. Have fun! ;-)

Ok I did rub some into the back of my hands. Seems to absorb fairly rapidly and completly. Leaves your skin super soft, not greasy or sticky. Nothing absorbs well on the palms of the hands so dont waste your time slathering it all over unless your going for super moisturizing AND you are going to do nothing else for a good while. You'd want to give it a chance to work its magic on you. I took just a tiny tiny bit (1/4 tsp. maybe) and worked it in. I wonder about using it for massage as it does absorb in so fast. Be prepared to use a whole lot for a full body massage. I can think of a bunch of spa treatments that can be created using this stuff as a signature. Its really cool.

I'm waiting on that person or couple who want to travel with their own personal massage therapist to Belize! If you think that might be you CONTACT ME!!! LOL I'm dying to go. Been lurking on this bb for over a year and a half, reading about all of ya'lls great adventures and well Im ready to have some of my own :-) In due time I reckon. Tho I am serious about going with and providing massage in exchange for travel expense. C'mon make my Christmas! laugh

I'm finding lots of uses for the Coconut oil, mainly cooking. It is terrific as a hairconditioner too. my family have all tried it on their hair before shampooing and really works well. Softens skin (I keep some in my shower for after shaving) It penetrates the skin much faster if you shower off a bit after applying it.
cool

I thought the coconut oil on toast sounded a little strange, but this morning I put it on our toast for breakfast...DELICIOUS!!!! I make Rice the Mexican method, but this morning I put a spoon of Coconut oil in the pan then added the rice,, later Canela (cinnamon stick) and some vanilla, milk, sugar. It made for a terrific breakfast. laugh laugh wink Love the flavor!!!

Chloe - Belizean Bread Pudding?? Sounds yummy. A little rum sauce ( with Belizean Rum of course!) over the top add some shredded coconut
( Never had it but this is how I envision it). Top with a scoop of Mannelly's home made ice cream! Man I love food.
