Wendy,
My husband bought me a lovely conch pearl in San Pedro on our last trip. He had a local artist set it for me for my birthday. I just love it. I've gotten hundreds of compliments on it, and many have said they have never heard of them and were so impressed with it's uniqueness. My husband has a friend from Mexico who used to get them, and gave them away to his daughters. Now he wants some for his new wife. I've been considering getting a pair to make into earrings. Let me know the prices and I'll pass along the info to hubby and our Mexico friend.

FYI: they is such a thing as fake conch pearls that are made out of the shell of the conch, so buyer beware. Now I am not suggesting that there is or ever has been anyone in Belize that would take advantage of a tourist, so do not infer anything into this comment that is not intended.

I searched for about 3 years 30 years ago to find four pearls the size and color I wanted to make ear rings, pendant and a ring. My wife thought they turned out beautiful, although I thought a couple of rods and pen international reels would have been more beautiful. laugh

PS; here is a web page of some interest. I do not totally agree with eveything on it, but it has some good points. They are many other web pages you can look at for info on conch pearls. http://www.jewelrygenius.com/conchpearls.html

My dad has worked in a fishing cooperative in Belize for over 30 years and of all the conch brought in by the Belizean fishermen, he managed to save me 4 pearls - two small pink, one orangey, one large cream colored.
I have always wondered how many must be out there but my presumption was that there can't be many. Back in those days, the conch were plentiful, and huge. I can't see where there can be an abundance of them now, especially since the conch fishery is extremely stressed and the conch brought in by the fishermen are smaller and the catch is significantly less than "the old days."

Just to let ya'll know...I am a resident! Hi, GailM, real conch pearls are more rare than oyster pearls, and yes, only about 1 in 10,000 conch have a pearl. Loads of fake ones on the market!!! Technically, it is not a pearl but a "calcium concretion". Took Sunday off so sorry about any replies. Okay, Peter???

Special this week is a butterscotch round pearl, 13.48 carats at $1,000 US. Serious inquiries can e-mail me! Later all.

Read an interesting account by the head botanist from Jamaica Botanical Garden. Crown sent him to Belize in 1883 to report on economic crops. He mentioned that the Bahamas were exporting 3000.00 ( British sterling) per year of pearls from commom conch.

Belize has several species of conchs, including the queen (the one you eat), the milk, hawk wing, and fighting. Off season, you may get a conch dish, but it is the horse conch (not a true conch).
There are lots of variations in the local naming of things, thus the reason for taxonomy (and I guess the reason I had to learn those damn genus and species names for all those marine creatures I studied).
As far as I know, there is not a common conch so this could have been a name used either by a certain region or may have been the name used prior to the proper classification of the conch.
When I was in the Bahamas a while back, I asked my aunt about the abundance of queen conchs and she said that they were so depleted that they now either harvest the trumpet triton (but I don't know if it makes a pearl) or they buy their conch from Belize!

I wish they wouldn't harvest the Trumpet Triton. It is one of the very few natural predators of the Crown of Thorns. The Crown of Thorns is a spiny starfish that gobbles up whole reefs and leaves a crumbling mess in their wake. There are not enough Trumpet Tritons to keep the CofT in check as it is.
