I just hate this...
The Major and I must return to the states, for a number of reasons, so I am putting the little bookstore up for sale.

The business is brand new, very well stocked. It has been well received by the community and tourists as well.

If you are interested in a small business, up and running, with a great future, please contact me at cindyb@barefootbooks-belize.com, or PM through this site.

Chris is right...I'm selling, not closing.

I'm also committed to helping supply the new owner (if they want) with stock from the states so that it will remain fresh.

From the reception I've gotten in the short time we've been open, this is something a number of people have wanted and appreciate having.

Sorry that you lost money every month but perhaps you should both have given or spent more time on your project -I seriously doubt that Panama is going to prove easier or cheaper than Belize to set up a business.

Hey Guys!

Karen Boudreaux and Rob Henley will be assuming the reins of the bookstore on Thursday, December 22.

Please welcome them as warmly and support them as you have the Major and I.

Rob is a licensed massage therapist and Karen is a travel industry professional. Both have a great love of books. The couple has recently made San Pedro their home.

Welcome Rob and Karen!

Hey PhillyTodd,

As I am from Southern Louisiana and now further south than that....it is not considered polite to ask questions about money in public. LOL! And I am also from New Orleans....so I don't think I want to expose San Pedro to the bar and strippers thing. We are open to all suggestions and commentary, in good fun!! Please come in and introduce!

A "terric" business if you advertise have a swimming pool and are conveniently located-bunch of crap if the pool is a sometimes upright Walmart special pool which is about 10 feet wide and 3 feet deep, a location about 75 feet from the airport runway and a "5 min", "1/2 mile" walk to town that really equals running a 10 minute mile-guess what Pedro's Inn did

Top
#131824 - 01/08/06 07:42 PM Re: Bookstore for Sale
Pedro1 Offline
Actually the pool was 15 feet in diameter and 4'6" deep
never did I not say it was near the runway-the building has Pedro's Inn painted on both sides -all printed materials have a map printed with the runway next door.
What do you expect with prices starting at 10usd per night
Oh! what else do you get at Pedro's-
cheapest international phone calls on the island
Free Internet/Free bar pool/Free fussball/a couple of TV's with cable and satellite(only hotel with both systems).

ps all of the Yacht club brochures (which is further away than Pedro's) states 5 min walk-
Ramon's which is a quick three minute walk says situated on the edge of town
an airconditioned bar with the most comfortable bar stools in Belize
the bar prices are cheaper than any hotel/guest establishment on the island
The Inn is also one of the cleanest
but what the hell should I make it cheaper by buying second hand sheets/towels/blankets-only clean once a month
maybe I should start selling second and dog eared books at ridiculously high prices and I can cut the costs and prices even further.
ps Sandb-Have you ever visited my establishment

While not a big deal you obviously are unaware of the speed at which you walk. You do not walk anywhere near 6 MPH. Less than 1% of the population is even capable of RUNNING a 10 minute mile. \:\) Oh, and nice job with the math!

I just counted; only one tongue.

I'd patronize a book shop except that would mean I'd have to take the time to learn to read. That's hard to do when I'm swimming laps in the short pool and working on shaving seconds off my time in the mile.

Relay, anyone?

Hey Everybody...... WOW!! this posting has seemed to take on a life of it's own! As we have only owned the bookstore for 3 weeks, I am amazed at the interest it has generated. I hope you all stop in and introduce yourselves.....we are always open to ideas and suggestions.

I have been coming to San Pedro for over 11 years and have lived down south in Belize prior to this. I have always been amazed that there was no bookstore of this type and we had already planned to open something once we arrived in San Pedro. So it seemed extremely serendipitous that Cindy was selling just after we got here. I just didn't realize it would generate such notoriety!!

Hope to see ya'll soon!
Karen

P.S. PhillyTodd.....no southern sensibilities offended! Looking forward to meeting you in February!

P.S.S. Catatonic Motivator......no requirement that you can read.... just come in and say hello!

I'm a Pogo fan. Perhaps you recall Barnstable Bear?

Perhaps not. Sometimes Walt Kelly's not considered the consummate commentator those of us us believe he was, was.

Regardless, a bookshop can be a wonder...or a wander; really depends upon one's perspective and the stock on hand.

Best of luck. And do whatever you can to fulfill P1's suggestion. Great for business in a locale like SP, I'd offer.

Hey Pedro1,

It is our plan to have the current reads in stock as soon as shipping allows. Once we get things in a groove hopefully we can have all requests within a very short period of time. Bear with us while we establish our contacts.

And yes, Catatonic....I do recall Pogo and Barnstable Bear. I'll have to see what's available!

I hope everyone will come in and say hello. We will be closed this Wednesday cuz we have to go over to Belize City for some business tomorrow and next day. But after that....give us a yell.

Karen owns the book store now, not Cindy.

I went in and bought a few oldies but goodies the other day. There is a nice selection of kids books, tons of fiction.

No, the 10 current best sellers weren't there but the new owners will probably figure out how to get the best sellers soon considering there are daily
flights to Belize from the US.

Bookstores must be very profitable......they bailed without giving proper notice to their landlord....and contrary to their lease (I know I wrote it)! They also left all utility bills unpaid and a condo that hadn't been swept since they moved in by the looks of things! I don't think the geography of being on an island is the problem they need to fix.

I was seriously interested in buying the store but the numbers didn’t look right and the stock seemed all wrong. I still think a properly run – and stocked – bookstore would be a good thing. After all the grief involved in starting a business in Belize it seems like baling after just five months is a pretty short time to decide it’s a mistake. What’s the skinny?

Well, I'll jump back here to set the record straight on a few things...

the little bookstore turned a profit the third full month in business, which is phenomenal in ANY market...that's why it sold and had a more than a few truly interested paarties

as for leaving without proper notice to the landlord...he was advised THREE months before we left and we continued to advise. We did NOT leave utility bills unpaid and the condo was clean and we even paid a local lady to come in and clean so that it would be ready for the next tenant. We left coffee pot, blender and many kitchen items behind for the next tenant.

It is amazing how many folks will gossip, speculate and flat out lie on this bulletin board!

We left some really good friends and good times behind on the island, and well, some not so good folks...but you will find that anywhere.
