hey Shake...The gov't can't control airfare like, say, Mexico can.
An analogy: try to fly from Santa Fe, NM to Birmingham, AL. Very expensive, right? Two small markets. Cancun & Cozumel are relatively cheap because of the larger volume. Larger volume=lower price (there was this Sam Walton guy). That is a fact that Belize will not be able to change any time soon. Heard of AeroMexico and Mexicana?
When you see the Belize equivilant, then the gov't might have some control.
Susan, I kinda agree w/ what Andy said, but I don't agree that this is the same. It took a traveling public a while to find out where Maui was, now it has long-ago overtaken Honolulu as an "in" destination. But, they had to get on the map first. Once you're on the map, I don't think your 15 minutes are up. Did people quit going to Cancun after it got on the map? No, you get the exposure from whatever means (and this is cheap advertising), then deliver on the expectation of the traveling public. BTW, I don't see many celebrities in this deal. These folks may be getting 15 minutes worth, but Ambergris Caye couldn't buy a better marketing tool (all moral opinions aside).
Rubba, they filmed this thing almost in a vaccuum. Their ratings don't depend on how many San Pedranos they interview or put on camera, but how much titillation they can cram in between commercials. Most of San Pedro pretty much wrote off this shoot. Only a few local guides got any of the business. Look at all the mainland tours they did. Next the mainland folks start whining cuz they didn't get on camera.
Take it for what it is.
