Hi:

A few quick questions

1) is there a local bus from the international airport to belize city?

2) how long, by bus, does it take from belize city to dangriga

3) in general do you have any opinions on travelling around the mainland by bus (and taxi)vs renting a car.

thanks for any input

1) No, not from the international airport, but if don't have much luggage you can walk to the Northern Highway (almost a mile) and catch a bus there into Belize City. About a buck. If you take a taxi it is US$15 (for the taxi, not per person).

2) By bus (Z-Line or Ritchie) via the coastal road it is about two hours; via Belmopan and the Hummingbird it is about three hours. Either way the cost is around US$5.

3) A car gives you the freedom to go when and where you want to. With a car you can do tours on your own that otherwise would cost a good deal. A car makes the most sense if you have several people. Buses are cheap and a good way to meet Belizeans. Most however are recycled American school buses or other buses and aren't particularly comfortable. Taxis most everywhere, except within Belize City, are expensive.

Lan: Ritchie Bus Service is no more - they were bought out by Z-Line about 3 months ago. Also, the Coastal Road will take 2 hours only if it's passable, i.e., hasn't been raining too much.

Thanks, Mary, I remember now about Ritchie's being bought. I will say that the coastal road is passable nearly all the time, except after heavy rains. I have driven it probably 50 times, most often in the summer, and have been lucky enough never to find it closed. However, with the Hummingbird now in great condition, it's so much more pleasant to go that way.

Lan-

I'll be staying in Ambergris Caye March 22 to March 29th. In the past several days I have been reading a lot about Tobacco Caye and I am quite intrigued. Here's my plan-- depart AC by boat to BZ City, take a bus to Dangriga and then another boat out to Tobacco Caye for one night. Back to Dangriga next day....bus to Belize City, catch flight back home. Is this worth the trip....I don't mind the travel, as I would like very much to see more than AC. Will transportation be easy and more importantly, will this be expensive?
