This is a topic I love to talk about... talk about... (get it, I said it twice) laugh.
This has always been a tuogh question to answer. Officially, the policy of the island is nope... but as I've told many people before, where there is a will there is a way. The further north you go, the more tolerant people are.

If you let me know when you are going and where you're staying I will be more than happy to fly down, kept guard and tell you if anyone is coming. laugh

what denny says is true. there was a group of italians at ramon's when i was there. i think they sunbathed at every resort during their stay. we saw them a few times. EVERYBODY on the island knew about it soon enough. MY husband looked! you can do it, but you will get stared at alot. aren't we americans silly? (my top is too old for that kind of thing now, since my kids, anyway).

Yes....women do sunbathe topless here from time to time. It's true European culture is not as skiddish about this activity as U.S. residents are. Not saying it's a bad thing....just a difference in the way we were all raised.

Wouldn't mind finding a secluded spot myself to tan my boobs.....LOL.....but it ain't Ramon's....and I have to live here.....LOL

We should also remember that while we are grown adults and can chose to go topless or not.....there are FAMILIES here with children and we should try to respect their comfort zones as well. It's just courtesy.

This is not Mexico or the French Riviera and most Belizeans do not even wear swimsuits.
They swim in shorts and a top. They are very modest people when it comes to swimming in public.

So...if you must go topless....just remember....you probably will get stared at and some people may find it difficult to fully enjoy their beach time with their kids.

Every wrinkle and stretch mark represents each one of those wonderful kids, and the years behind getting them grown. There is NOTHING sexier or more desirable in my book! Hey SS, I guess I missed out on that naked sunbathing while I was there last week. Maybe I should have snuck away from the group on our tour to Basil Jones and caught a few sun rays on those areas forbidden to see the sun unless in Rio. But noooooo still white as white can be. Infact with this awesome tan I came home with they practicly glow!!! LOL!!!

First trip to SP wife and I were walking down the beach behind the police station. Wife had on a bikini top. Real nice gentleman came up to us and identified himself as the local police chief and showed us his badge. He very politely informed us that some people on the island were not familar with ladies walking on the beach with such a small top and would my wife mind putting a shal or wrap on. Of course as time went on we saw more and more tolarance to bikinies. Thank God!!

Forgot to say that that was in 1989!!!!

Bathing attire tip: keep your t-shirt on. Women walking around town in a bathing suit is object of many a snicker.

discussed this topic with hubby last night, and we agreed with all of you. it is refreshing to find a culture that is still modest. things here in the US have gotten WAY out of hand, from a fashion sense.

I agree Jane. I was raised that when you go to a restaurant, you wear clothes. Not swim suits!!!! I don't know about you all, but the entire time I was in AC I never saw a local woman walking on the beach in a swimsuit or even swimming!!!! It was always men and children. If you pay attention you will be able to figure out what's acceptable. My boys fussed, but I always made them carry a shirt to the beach and on the boats we rode on. Hubby is very old fashioned. Even at home the boys must be fully dressed to sit at the table to eat. Caps are removed when entering a building. Especially a restaurant. The boys complain about "hat hair". to bad!!!! The boys try to get away with the popular dress styles, but thank goodness their school MAKES them tuck their shirts in AND wear a belt. No caps allowed. No tank tops, and only knee length shorts. The girls must wear a bra and skirts no shorter than fingertips. No underware showing or butt cracks at school here!! I LIKE IT!!!!!!!

I agree! Would never walk around any town just in a Bikini or not dress to go to a restaurant. I love those little sundresses and sarongs. Oh yeah and the Survivor look. I need to go shopping now. It's much more fun to dress up cute. Bikinis are for the Beach and topless is for a lonly beach up north. I got the point on that one.

Hi Jane and all.....yeah!!! finally some women in their 30's that will still go to a beach! I'm living in bbbrrrrrland.. (Colorado) but originally from Cali, and missing the water terribly! That is how I came across Belize/AG. I wanted a place to plant my chair in the water surrounded by beauty W/O tourists!! But I can't seem to find anyone who wants the same, and that can look past our bodies that now depend upon ....as Jane put it so well...'wires & spandex'!! I too do not care for nor do I have tan lines, and would love to know where to go to avoid these things but also know that you need to respect others. I can't believe there are woman over 30 that don't go to the Beach anymore. Why??? First of all being in the 30th is not old and most certainly I don't feel or look old. I love the ocean, sun and beach and will crawel from my hammock across the beach to the ocean if I get that old even with major flaws and wrinkles. If people don't like how I look when I am an old lady they just have to deal with it because I will not stay away from the Beach because of age or looks. I have seen many older lady's enjoying the beach (yes even nude). So if there is some lady's that do not go to the beach after 30 anymore than that just leaves more space for us. Ha, Ha!!!

I couldn't agree with you more!!! I would crawl or be dragged just to get to a beach!!! That's just the ultimate for me. As far as women not wanting to go, I guess it's because age has added pounds and 'unwanteds' to their bodies. I'm just somehow lucky that I don't look older then 24 so I've heard (just get close or see me naked and that flies out the door!!! lol) and I have been lucky in not gaining weight. That's pretty much their biggest complaint. Plus, too many people just don't take the time to enjoy life anymore......

Ok, so answer a question for this AC novice (first trip in May). I am NOT being self depricating, just honest. I do not look good in a suit, but it is much more important to me to have fun w/my fun loving family of college kids and young minded hubby. Will I be the only truly overweight person on the beach in AC? Are they all hard bodies, or everyone in shape?

there are no worries there. this is not cancun. nobody really gives a....darn. you come to vacation, so vacation!! there all all types.

Well, I tried to remember all of the hard bodies I saw while I was there... hmmm, I'm sure there were a few but I can't really remember. Most of the people that vacation and live there are quite normal... meaning... tall and overweight, short and heavy, skinny and whatever... what I mean is just go and have a good time, don't worry a thing about it... you're gonna love it!
