Hi, we will arrive in Belize in the late afternoon and were thinking of just staying at the Embassy Hotel the first night Has anyone stayed there? How long can we expect to take at the airport? Where are the best places to snorkle? Thanks

The Embassy is okay, nothing special except it's convenient. It's only a couple of years old but it's already a bit down at the heels.

There are so many nicer places to stay in and around Belize City -- Villa Boscardi, Colton House, The Great House, Four Fort Street, the Radisson Fort George.

Where do you plan on going during you visit? Then we would have a better idea of places to suggest. I have stayed at the Embassy,$50US. They do not have a restaurant, the dinner is $15 and is at a set time and whatever the cook is cooking that day. If you miss it, there is a little shop kitty corner to the bank at the airport, that you can get a sandwich, burger, etc. if they have any left. I would recommend Lan's suggestion of booking into a place in the City if you have to be there overnight. If you plan to go to the Cayes, go to the Water Terminal directly from the airport.

The Embassy is very convenient if you are between connections. There IS a restaurant downstairs (local food) and a rice & beans lady out front some days. It ain't the Ritz, but it's clean and they have hot water!!! (inside joke)

If you stay at the Embassy Hotel make sure you get an upper floor. Beware of critters on the first floor.
